knockoff the caps lock as is referred to as shouting which is a forum rule no no & most of us are not deaf. 2.5" or 3.5" version of external drive? sata, firewire or usb2 interface?

I prefer using an external enclosure, with an internal hard drive in the enclosure. My enclosure is connected to my computer via a firewire cable. I do have the option of connecting it via USB.

I swap out hard drives, depending what I am doing. You don't have that option with a true external hard drive.

Why would you limit yourself to a 160 when 500's are just as cheap,actually they're cheaper per GB,you could also look at just getting a 500 + an enclosure (be sure to get one that can take IDE & SATA),shop around parallel imports are all over the place,here in nz i could make my own seagate 500GB + external case for less than $150. nz in euro's that'd be say $75.00 euro

Any of the hdd's will be fine they all have 3 or more year warranties,external cases on the other hand are not what i would call all good qaulity,my preference is STLab which is ally & has 8 dome type screws so it can be fully stripped,so all that's left is the base,great for using as a test bench,however just recently i bought another one but it was'nt an STLab,more of a copy but it's much larger & has IDE & SATA connectors inside,it was nice n cheap too,it works great so far & the size makes it easy to work with when swapping drives arround

EDIT:Regarding parallel imports, if there's a warranty claim there could be an issue with waiting since your local authorised distributor for OEM's won't do the warranty for you even tho it's made by the same manufacturer,instead you have to take it back to the original person you bought it from,the prob there is they need to send it back to their supplier which in all likleyhood will take a few weeks for approval

Person obviously has a hearing impedement,when you start to lose said hearing your voice increases so you can hear what your saying tho you don't realise your beginning to shout :p

@jcarp
USB or FIREWIRE are the type of connectors the external case use to connect to the comp by cable (USB is what your printer uses),best bet if your unsure go with USB or get a case that has USB & FIREWIRE connectors at the rear of the external case

As for IDE or SATA harddrive that's the type of connectore the hdd uses to connect to the external case on the inside,best bet get a case that supports both

WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF THE EXTERNAL ENCLOSURE?? I MEAN IF YOU BUY THE ENCLOSURE AND ARE USING MULTIPLE DRIVES FOR THE ENCLOSURE THEN WHY NOT BUY MULTIPLE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES??? I HAVE AN HP LAPTOP AND IVE HAD IT FOR 1.5 YEARS AND I FEEL THE PERFORMANCE ISNT UP TO PAR AND COULD BE BETTER SO MY PLANS WERE TO BACK UP ALL FILES TO THE EXTERNAL DRIVE AND THEN FORMAT MY LAPTOP...BUT I JUST RECENTLY FOUND OUT I DONT HAVE THE REBOOT DISC AS THEY DIDNT INCLUDE ONE IN MY ORIGINAL PACKAGING? Depends on what you want to pay,for me buying an enclosure then an hdd is cheaper than if i bought a premade it comes down to what the best price is per unit,plus the fact i'm after a particular type of enclosure as most are not able to be used as test benches,like i said before the ones i have can be fully stripped of top & sides for easy access

The laptop should have its own recovery partition,if you look in the ALL PROGRAMS list there should be wording like "recovery options" or something like that,or look thru the HELP & SUPPORT in the program list for recovery options,normallly F10 or F8 on reboot will get you to where you can reformat,there should also be a set of recovery disks you can make you'll need to look under PC TOOLS or some other such wording in the ALL PROGS list,or ring the manufacturer for how to access the reformat tool or look thru the instruction manual

I have 2 Icy Dock external enclosures. I got them from Newegg, here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817198004

The advantage of having an external enclosure, and whatever number of internal hard drives you want to swap out is, buying 1 external enclosure, and say 3 internal hard drives, it is cheaper than buying 3 external hard drives.

You can also check out the BlackX dock.

Am I the only one conditioned to completely ignoring posts that are written in caps lock? It hurt my brain to just look at it. If you can't post in lowercase, copy and paste words already typed somewhere to make your post please. Or take what you type and run it through toLowerCase().

No, I just think you are the one that is completely conditioned to NOT reading any part of his posts. If you had read his post, you would have know that his caps lock button does not function properly.

@jacarp

Vista was designed to run on a system with LOTS of raw power. Don't upgrade unless you can get a decent proc and ram.

Being hp F10 will get you to your reformat options,there's 3 stages
1-system restore
2-repair:reinstalls OS but leaves all other files & data intact,however any 3rd party software will have to be reinstalled even tho folders etc are still there,your music & photo's etc will be intact as will any emails etc
3-destructive reformat-complete wipe& will put comp back to when you first bought it

All HP's come with a recovery partition,check MY COMPUTER ,if you see what appears to be 2 hard drives,the smaller of the two is the recovery partition also HP let you make 1 set of recovery disks the option should be under "pc help & tools",look for "create recovery disk set".
EDIT: On the boot screen you should see at the bottom "F10 system recovery" or possibly F8 or both

I suggested a possible dock, and a solution in case the problem was not your fault.

Please read carefully before going on. By the way, if caps is stuck can you not just hold shift?

He is basically refuting the idea that caps = yelling at the top of your lungs. I realize he mentioned something about a malfunctioning button (yet never clearly states this) and posted possible solutions. Now I would appreciate if you got off of my back about it.

So...who wants to play TF2 with me?
