Computer randomly freezing,on differnet hard drives??

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem I`m having.
My system randomly freezes, it can happen while I`m on the net, transfering files, while its running at night downloading or when its just been started up and nothings running(apart from the essentials). When it freezes I need to hold the power button in for the 5 secs to shut it down, this is where it gets interesting, when I restart the system it starts up normally as if it had been shut down properly then when I go into event viewer to see whats happened to it there is no error/warning message about it crashing. I thought it was a hard drive problem so I changed the hard drive but it still happens. I have also changed the version and disc of xp pro I used for each install. It also could happen twice in an hour or it could go a couple of days running smoothly. Any help would be much appreciated.
System spec
Asrock ConRoe 1333-D667 motherboard
Intel Pentium D dual core 3Ghz
2x1Gb of DDR2 240pin ram
Seagate 120Gb sata hd (also frooze on Maxtor 250Gb sata)
Operating system
XP Pro sp3 (each hard drive has had a different version and different disc installed)

How hot is the system getting? Use a program like Everest or Speedfan to check.

Don`t know how hot its getting I`ll run speedfan and post asap.
Do you know what the normal or average temp is?

It varies depending on what components you have. You're looking for no more than 60 ish for the CPU, and around 45 for the motherboard, 45-50 for the hard disks.

I was running speedfan and getting the results of
system 32c
cpu 39c
aux jumps btwn 46-55c
hd0 38c
hd1 34c
when the system froze again. Firefox didn`t even register that the session had shut down unexpectedly?
Thanx for the advice you`ve given me so far!

Have you installed any new software lately? Yes or no, I'd recommend a system restore back to a date you definitely didn't have the problem and see what happens. The temps look fine.

Its a freash install that I`ve just done that its happening on. I was wondering if it could be either a problem with the cpu or motherboard as its happened with two different makes and models of hd. Is there any suggestions you could give to check them?

1. make sure your hard drives are set to dma and not PIO (control panel/system/hardware/device manager/ide ata/atapi controllers
2. run a scandisk on both hard drives with the box to fix errors checked.
3. disable the video thumbnail shell on the folders (thumbnails will cause explorer to crash in windows xp especially if some of the video files are corrupt)
Description: When opening folders with movie files in them, windows explorer (the desktop) crashes.
Problem: This is a known issue with Windows XP's video thumbnail thing in Explorer. Being a thing invented by MS, it's buggy and doesn't always know how to handle things not supported by MS, and occasionally fails on things it does know how to support too. Every now and again it will crash and take Explorer down with it. Easy to solve thankfully.
Solution: Windows XP:
* Go to Start -> Run... and type regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
Press enter. Done. It's as simple as that. If you, for some reason want it back, simply do the same thing again, but remove the "/u". That is: Start -> Run... regsvr32 shmedia.dll
This will only disable movie thumbnails/previews, not picture thumbnails.
Also you might check some unrelated hardware that might be impacting the computer, example if you are using the motherboards built-in soundcard, you might try disabling it and installing a pci soundcard. Also disconnect any usb media cardreaders and usb 4in1 extensions. Many times the hard drives are good, but the problem is caused by other hardware.
As far as software, antispyware is something I would look at, also iso editing software (poweriso/ultraiso/virtual drive programs). But with software only uninstalling the program is the best way to check.

Sorry its taken so long to get back to you, while I was looking into your ideas I have found out through direct x diag and device manager that my onbaord sound is not getting recognised(as in its saying its not there) and device manager is saying that I have an unknown pci device. The only pci card I have on the computer is a firewire card and thats working alright. I don`t have any card readers or the like connected(more hassle than there worth)same with iso software. Its happened with different anti virus software as well. I`m starting to think it maybe a problem with my motherboard. I know I`ve a sound card somewhere its just finding it. I`ll keep the post updated when I can.

Just an update,
Found the sound card and fitted it. It has solved the sound problem and also solved the unknown pci device. Hasn`t froze iin a couple of days so heres hoping its ok.
