Can a dvd+r burner be configured to burn dvd-r?

Forgive me if this is an idiot question...I have a Plextor dvd+r writer, but was wondering if there is any way I can configure it to burn dvd-r? Is the drive's inability to burn dvd-r a software issue, or a hardware issue? If it's the former, is there a software patch I can download to make it burn dvd-r? Many thanks!
