No DX10 in XP. You can enable some effects with hacks and such but DX10 is Vista only.

Is DX10 worth it? Not really. Not unless you have a HD4870 or GTX260 or GTX280.
Is Vista worth it? Will if you have programs that are made for 64bit they will run faster on Vista 64bit than on XP 32bit.

Looks like DX10 is actually just a con trick.. All that seems to be required is some hacking of the strings in a couple of .ini files and the games play just fine with XP.
This behaviour by M$ with the connivance of game makers is called "lock-in" and is a form of antitrust activity getting the consumer to buy something they have no reason to buy for some "apparent" benefit which does not exist.
Originally posted by sandman: Remember: There is no ?Dx10 only? game currently available. The 2 pathetic attempts by microsoft were Halo 2 and Shadowrun, both of which run flawlessly on XP with minor modification. (Upon closer look, it was found out, that both of these games actually run on Dx9 programming. All they had was a ?lock protection? preventing them to install if Dx10 was nos present in the registry)
The whole deal with Crysis Very high settings, was a business deal between the Crytek team and Microsoft, in which MS offered a big cash settlement to Crytek if they would agree to ?lock out? the very high settings under Windows XP.
Thank God for Intelligent Hackers who have brough this into the light. Somebody should really sue Microsoft for these practices of Bribery and corporate corruption. I guess nobody is brave (or dumb?) enough to tackle a Monopoly like Microsoft.
Other games which offer a ?Dx10 mode? like World in Conflict and Company of Heroes expansion, prove that the visual diferences are totally neglectible. They are hardly noticable. Definitely nothing Dx9 can?t currently do. Yet, they do strike a very noticeable performance hit in games, due to Vista sucking in much more resourses then XP.
I?m 100% sure there is currently nothing Dx10 can do, that Dx9 can?t replicate. No new graphic technology has come out to justify the existance of Dx10, much less ?Dx10 only? software.
I?m not saying that Dx10 will never take off and actually start offering significant graphic advances and performance enhancements over Dx9 (I really hope it does), but it has been almost 2 years since the release of Vista and dx10, yet we have seen NOTHING to justify an upgrade. All we have seen and experienced with Vista are lower performances, hardware and software incompatibility and overall inestability.
Microsoft should get their act together and offer a new OS that is actually an ?Upgrade? from our current OS. Something that is more resource efficient, more stable, and offers significant advantages over older OSes. What pisses me off is that instead of doing this, they try to Force users into changing by willingly disabling features in games and software, so that they will not function anymore in XP.
Try some of his suggestions.. They work in an xp vm run on gentoo.

Yup.. bling and bloatware.. plus a load of drm (soon to be enabled when they think enough has been sold) It isn't an upgrade.. In the trade we call it a scam and spend lots of working days upgrading fista installations to XP or alternatives.

It's decent. It's not half as bad as most people make it out to be. The 64bit version really is good if you have 64Bit apps.
