PC to Stereo -- need a preamp?

I've burned up my second Sony receiver (permanent "Protect Mode").

I use the receiver for iTunes on my PC. My best guess is that the analog audio output doesn't have enough juice -- I have to turn the receiver up to about 75% of its max volume to get a reasonable volume from iTunes. Everything I can think of in my PC is set to max volume.

What's the simple answer here? Preamp? After market sound card?

All I care about is decent music from my PC. Should I simply skip the receiver and go for some killer direct PC connect speakers? (right now I can switch to B speakers upstairs, which is important).
