Howdy peoples, I do some jobs for a local community group on their computers (at no charge of course). They have a small wired network set up with 6 pc's running win 98 (due to age) and one acting as server latest mod cons with virtual drives win XP etc. Question is that the network was okay, then the server motherboard was replaced with an new one now the other computers do not find the server on boot up (cannot find permanent connection or sim). All connected via ethernet LAN on a hub. Out of interest I changed PC6 to the same IP as the server, the response from the server was that there is now a conflict due to same addresses and simlar response from the PC6. Which seems to show that they know each other are there but won't connect. I have done power downs etc including hub but they won't connect. One thing I did notice is that all PC's have a gateway address 255.etc but not the server.(There is no internet connection anyway)....any ideas...(folders etc are shared).

check the windows firewall - it may not be configured to allow file sharing thru.

you may want to try fixing the gateway addresses and subnet addresses to make sure they are all the same.. the gateway addresses should all be the ip address of the router unless the server is running a dhcp server

I apologise if this is a bit late getting back to you. Only just tried the fix out on their system....entering Gateway address opened the network back up....thanks for your help
