Guys when it comes to putting a computer together, I know nothing. So I am turning to you for help. I don't do any gaming, maybe one day but not now. Mostly video editing and backup. Would like to have something that will be able to be upgrade for a long time. Have been looking at some barebones kits and this is what I found would like opinions.

Not a bad barebone, but NEVER use the PSU included in Barebone deals, especially not that one, it's terrible, will probably go bang before 80W, let alone 800. The rest of the components are fine though.

What would you recommend as a PSU on my budget? I don't need one near that big anyway, although it kinda hurts to have to junk the one already included in the price and add to it. What else besides an OS would you suggest I add to the kit? Thanks for the response.

P.S- If there is another similar kit somewhere else that you have seen and would recommend let me know I would appreciate it.

I'd recommend an Antec Earthwatts 380W, nothing less.
You will need a CPU cooler, graphics card, CD/DVD drive, OS, Monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Ok, so here is an updated list. I still have a couple questions though. First, I have no idea what I need for a video card, could use a little guidance there. Second, I tried to read up on SLI, but I am not sure if I got the full grasp of it. Do I need it, if not I could trade out components and save some more money. Thanks for the help.

P.S- If this image screws up the page format too much let me know and I will change it to a link.

You don't need or want SLI, if you can, I'd suggest you go with a motherboard that isn't SLI compatible as they tend to be more reliable. Unfortunately tigerdirect's range of motherboards is useless.
Fortunately this board offers free shipping from Newegg.

@ sammorris

Thanks for all your help. I looked at the board you suggested but I kinda wanted to stay with AMD, don't really have a reason other than that is all I have ever had and they tend to be priced a little cheaper. I found this one that is not SLI, its a microATX but I dont think that will be a problem. Opinions? I could use help on anything you can think of.

Wandering into the domain of the cheap Asus boards now, which are to be avoided.

These two cost barely more than that combination and you get a faster CPU with a better quality motherboard. It will also overclock well, if that's your thing... :P
Just because you've had AMD up until now, doesn't mean you still have to.

I couldn't get it in an image like I wanted so sorry this may be hard to read. If it is just say and I will try something different. The more I get into this the more questions I have. But I will wait on most of them until I hear what you think of the current components. The CPU comes with a heatsink and fan and the motherboard has onboard video (At least I can wait and save up for a quality card) so those items are not listed. If there is anything else please let me know, if I can get the funds together this will probably be ordered if you think it will be fine. Thanks.

OCZ RAM and an Acer monitor wouldn't be my first choices, but the rest is fine, and even those components will do. If you can swap to a samsung monitor and Corsair RAM, that build will be pretty much perfect.

Thanks for the help, I will see what I can come up with and keep you posted. If you have any other post thoughts be sure to let me know. Once again thanks.

Edit: Was checking out what you suggested and the Samsung would be nice but I will take my chances with the Acer. Its not really a multimedia system so for the price difference I could add another ODD. The memory I will do though, however my question is: am I better off with 2 1gig sticks or a single 2gig stick. Reason being if I ever want to upgrade to 4gig, with the first option I would have to totally ditch the old RAM with the second option I could add another 2gig. I know there is something there with speed using single channel but not sure what.

Got some ideas and a different route. :)

I've "downgraded" your cpu but if you know anything about OC'in you can surpass the other one's "stock" GHz with ease I'm sure. ;) Oh and it saves you a few bucks too!! ;) Some of these are you choose, nothing bad in the lot really. ;)

cpu $69.99

RAM $27-$34

case $59.95

HDD $54.99-$69.99

psu $25.99-$54.99

gfx card $42

mobo $104-$120

cpu cooler
$24.99 and dang good for the money

monitor pick one...starting at $149

You can pick your own DVD-RW (SATA or IDE is fine) and KeyBoard (i would get PS/2 connections tho) @ $60 for both... :)

Most of the stuff I chose was FREE shipping but some has a little shipping fee. lol. Some of the items have MIR too... ;) If you shop around (ncix, tiger, ZZF, buy.com, and others) you can find better prices I'm sure.

If you add $60 for a keyboard and ODD the total comes to $686. It's a good little system and is upgradeable for sure. ;) The video card is ok for what it is and will do some light gaming but NOTHING special. ;)

Another route would be to go with onboard graphics. ;)

mobo w/ onboard graphics $59-$69 (saves $76-$92 depending on what you go with using the gfx card I picked)

so total goes down to ABOUT $596-$610

I know this may seem confusing but hey it is. lol. :P Once you narrow down your selections it will help you find a final price. ;)

hth... ;D

You know I used to like you! That is a good price I think but I am still glad I did what I did, sitting her viewing AD with a 19" LCD as opposed to having a volkswagen of a crt monitor on my desk (Its the only thing that I have received so far I can use). Anyway your a day late and a dollar short. ;)

You DON'T mean it!! :P Of course you got a better psu, a monitor (deal doesn't come with one), better mobo more than likely, better RAM (even tho deal comes with 4GB), as good or better case.. and so on!!! :P

You'll like the NEW computer.. I promise... :D

You are right I don't mean it. I am like a kid with 5 gallons of gasoline and no car to put it in right now. I got the PSU, RAM, CPU, and monitor today, but the rest won't be here till next week. All dressed up with no place to go.

I wouldn't fret over a reconditioned model, chances are it'll break long before the warranty...

ferguj1: A VW of a CRT monitor? Not to get into car-related discussions, but that's not the example I would have chosen... :P
