Please hear me out.
My wife and I just found out last night that our photographer had a problem with one of her memory cards and has lost a significant amount of our wedding photos. Namely, there are no pictures of our reception.
My wife is understandably devastated by this and has given up all hope other than asking relatives to mail their personal pictures of the night.
I really want to do something to ease the situation, so it dawned on me that we have a DVD of the entire night taken with a 720p digital camcorder.
What I would like to do is take some stills from this dvd in the highest resolution possible, doctor them a little in photoshop (in which I am by no means a pro), and print them off to present to her for her birthday in a couple of weeks.
Any input on methods and tips would be greatly appreciated. I could really use the help!

I'm sure there are others that may have better solutions than this, but the first thing to come to mind is VLC player. It has a snapshot function that may help you out.
EDIT: PowerDVD or Windvd both do the same thing. I just typically use VLC. :)

7thsinger's method is right on and yes there are other methods. If you're willing to pay for a program you might want to take a look at Topaz Moment. I like it.

You could try the 30 day trial.

A short story adizm55, when I got my dvd burner installed it came with Cyberlinks Power DVD software as standard issue. During play back of any movie played, if i press the "C" key it automatically CAPTURES the image. Now if you play back the video at normal speed then it'll be a hit and miss affair to get what you want. When you come to a point that you want to capture, slow/pause the video to increase the best result. Take care as to where the captured images are stored. This is totally changeable to a folder of your choice go through the settings of the software you use to playback video, and find the capture config.
There are other and possibly better ways or programs that do this, but hey.... if you've already got it, give it a try.
How'd you go?

Thanks for the input so far. Realistically, how well do you think I can make these turn out?

There are many sites to get PhotoShop tips from. You can make them look real nice but it make take some time. I've been using PhotoShop for years and there's still much I have to learn but I have taken some pretty bad pictures and turned them into some really nice pieces. Just try to start out with the higest quality picts you can possibly get. That's why I suggested Topaz Moment. Using the 30 day trial should give you more than enough time to get the picts into your computer and then let PhotoShop work some magic.

A little bit of Photoshop magic can go a long way! In all reality if the video is good quality, and you get decent snap shots, you'll probably come out just fine, and make the wife happy.

Y'know just when you really don't wanna suggest a proggy that costs, and just plainly want to use what you got already, I forget about the usual 30 day trial period scenario. I'm glad that at least someones thinkin'... coz it wasn't me....lol. :p

Actually, I would be more than willing to pay for software if I was sure it could produce the kind of results I'm seeking. The reception was dark and so the video is as well. I just want some decent stills to print at a reasonable size and fill an album.
