I purchased a Memorex 16x dual layer external usb connected recorder.
It came with Nero 6 I later upgraded to Nero 8. My reason for this purchase was to place the major portion of my digital image library on the 4.7 and 8.7G DVD's I started with the 4.7G size and have created 4 discs, each has around 4.1G's of images in jpg, tiff and gif format. When I place one of the dvd's in the external Memorex (the internal wont read a dvd only cd's) it takes approximately 30 minutes before the list of folders comes up, in some cases 50 or so folders in various categories. Each file type is then subdivided into many categories. After the first folder list comes up I try to access one of them, it takes about an hour for that category to show, then I select another folder, it takes anouther hour to register that folder when I finly get to a jpg file it may take two hours to finaly read that file. I am doing all this in Windows Explorer.
I can create dvd slide shows that play on my computer or recorded to play on the TV with the DVD player with no problem.
The recording took a little longer than expected but did record. I Used Nero 8 with file verification
My OS is Windows XP Pro, will all updates except service pack 3. I have three hard drives totaling around 300GB's total with a little less than 200GB's of free space. I have 1.5G of RAM. The CPU is an Athlon XP, 1.9G speed.
I can create a 700MB cd, clear full of images and they read almost as fast as if they were on a folder on the computer.
