HI I recently bought an xbox 360 and I have a D-link 624 router when I plug my xbox 360 in to hookup to live it always has problem with the DNS servers and finding an ip, it alos has problems port forwarding and allowing programs to acess the internet. I have read alought of bad reviews about this router so I have decided to buy a new one. I was wondering what is the best router for playing online and downloading stuff with torrents. I will spend up to 100$ I would like one that portforwards well and would work automatically when I hook my xbox up to it. Also what is my old router worth if I were to sell it.

Hmmm, well I would suggest getting the current version of that router. They add some letters on to it or something. Check online.

As for your torrent speeds, have you set a Static IP? My router doesn't automatically port forward either, but that's OK because I can enter in the port number myself and it only takes 2 mins.

My router gives out Dynamic ip's I can portforward the ports ,but the speed is still slow, I want one that automatically portforwards because my router is very fusey when it comes to port forwarding. First you have to allow the port then you have to go and allow it threw the filter and the firewall. I want one that is very fast because I need it for online gaming some people have told me not to go with D-link.

I would recommend a router that's flashable with DD-WRT firmware, in my case i bought Buffalo WHR-G54S's. One of the major bonuses of DD-WRT is that you can use the wierd but wonderful 'Static DHCP' ie you can dole out DHCP addresses but devices can always be given the exact same IP address as long as you define the MAC address in the relevant config screen. I have 17 pc's/xboxes on my network and they are always given the same IP address by the Static DHCP functionality. Port forwarding is then a doddle to setup as you don't have to constantly guess the IP address as you would if you used plain ole' DHCP.

Is it hard to flash with DDrt firmware I have flashed xbox 360 before so this must be easier. HOw much does one of those cost and how fast can it go. Also did the xbox 360 work automatically when you plugged it into that router?

I don't use xbox 360's, just the old ones. As to DD-WRT it's relatively easy to flash, just takes a while to familiarise yourself with all the extra options (even if just wanting to turn them off).
Here's a list of supported devices for DD-WRT = http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices

I've not used the D-Link 624 myself, though before buying something else it could just be that you need the latest firmware from D-Link (they are notoriously crap about keeping info on latest firmwares across all their website links) and/or you just need to mayb e tidy up the config on the D-Link.

edit- as abuzar posted, the WRT54G is a good router. I have one (and it's the infamous v5 of the router but i've always had 100% stability with mine). It can do DD-WRT but the v5 has to use a micro version of DD-WRT due to lack of ram, other versions have more ram though. I've kept my WRT54G as an emergency spare router. (i've only ever used stock Linksys firmware on mine though).
I currently have 2 Buffalo's, they're connected together via 'WDS' over WPA encryption, one Buffalo is upstairs and the other downstairs. This allows the whole house to be covered wirelessly, but all other devices are ethernet-connected instead of wirelessly, ie the only wireless devices are the 2 Buffalo's. I find this method gives 100% internet connection where previously (and on various different routers) that wireless machines would not be too reliable.

I know very little about 'Draft N' routers.

There's a snippet from here - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/shopper/labs/9445...cess-point.html

there's a comment in there that's a bit contradictory re Port Forwarding
Quote:
The Nfiniti is the only router here that doesn't support Dynamic DNS or port forwarding. This could cause problems if you want to run a web server at home, play online games or use download applications such as Bittorrent. You can add the ability to forward ports manually or via UPnP, but to do so you need to install firmware from Buffalo's website.
p.s. not trying to put you off, i just don't know too much about many other routers out there as once i get something that works 100% i don't do much research again.

That bit is up to you. I had a 60kps connection for the longest time, it was rubbish for torrents, but it depends on your uses. I have no idea what speed is good for online gaming either.

what I think I might do is drop my cable and then boost my internet with the extra money . I just need to figure out how to stream tv fom my computer to my tv any guides or porgrams that will help. If I drop the cable i will be albe to afford a 5mb connection. i used to have the 5 mb connection ,but my torrents will still slow like 30kb per second and I think it was because of myold router. Now I am thinking I should just buy a router that is all around good in every category. the gaming router is too expensive I just need to know the router is compatible with xbox live.

I don't have an xbox 360 so can't help on which routers work for live (ithough i guess most do), i do have a few old type xboxes and i play all my music & movies thru the xboxes via the awesome XBMC. I also don't know if the 360 can be used to stream movies or TV.

Back to xbox live again, it's usually just down to port forwarding, whichever router you get make sure to read up on how to setup port forwarding, though it's fairly easy; if it isn't easy it's probably just that a particular router's gui is crap in how they lay out the port forwarding screens/setup.

I recently bought the DLink Xtreme Wireless Router(DIR-655). I have it downstairs and my Laptop, Wii and PS3 is upstairs, and I get a fast connection. But with the 360 the wireless adapter is horrible as it only goes up to g/b I think. Best thing is to get an ethernet cable. I got a 100-150ft one to hook up to my 360, just had to run it through the walls. If you don't want to do that, i the Xtreme works great and is on sale at Best Buy for $100 (ends tomorrow though) and you can also port-forward and to tons of things with it.

I'd be wary of any other D-Links personally.

See if any info in here helps at all - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/697783

dude 150 bucks is a major rip off to set up a router. you can get a high end router for that. just buy something then come on the boards and we'll do it for free.

general guide to hooking up a router.

don't pop in that damn cd the router comes with. a lot of the times all it has on it is software to "manage" your network and a step by step guide on plugging the router in. all you need to know is ports 1 through 4 go to pc's and the internet port off to the side goes to your modem. then All the cd does after that is copy your computers MAC address and sending it to the router so the router uses that to spoof your isp into thinking the router is your pc. ISP's use MAC's to make sure your neighbor isn't stealing your internet connection.

Sometimes a way around is to unplug the ISP's modem for 30 sec. plug in your router to the ethernet then plug the power back into the ISP modem. Alternately you can call your ISP and have them reset your connection. (if they tell you to unplug the router, say you did but don't they want to sync your pc's MAC when they should be syncing your routers MAC.)

A third way to set up your router is by manually inputing your pc's mac. most routers have an option to do this. to find out your pc's MAC go to start>run: type in CMD hit enter then type in ipconfig /all into the comand prompt and your MAC will be the physical address under your ethernet adapter. I don't get how this works but it does. What I don't get is how can two devices have the same MAC on one network? anyone care to school me?

if you are having connectivity issues and you make sure all wires are connected go into the command prompt again and type in ipconfig /renew
this will reset your connection.

really geek squad is charging you 150 bucks for something that is very very simple to do.

My DIR-655 works perfectly fine, I torrent with it as well as game (some Live but not much).

I did have a problem with the DNS server not working on the 360, both with my DIR-655 and the DI-624.

I fixed the forwarding problems by assigning my XBox a Static IP. If you want to use your DI-624 still here is the "Port Forward" guide to getting Live's ports forwarded.

http://www.portforward.com/english/route...ox_Live_360.htm

As for the DNS problem, I manually switched by 360's DNS to OpenDNS and it worked like a charm. Here is a guide on how to get your 360 on both a Static IP (given everytime by the router) as well as changing the DNS:

http://portforward.com/networking/staticip-xbox360.htm

If you don't want to read the guide for the 360 here is basically what it says:

1. Go to the "System" blade.
2. Select "Network Settings" and push "A".
3. Select "Edit Settings" and push "A".
4. Select "IP Settings" and push "A".
5. Select "Manual" and push "A".
6. Select "IP Address" and push "A". This will popup a keypad from which you enter the static IP you assigned the XBox in the router.

7. Repeat for "Subnet mask", setting it as "255.255.255.0" and the "Gateway" as 192.168.0.1 (or whatever IP you type into your browser to access your router.)

8. From here you can choose if you want to test your connection or not. Personally I would not test it and go assign the "DNS" to "OpenDNS".

To do this go back to the "Network Settings" tab and press "A".

Then select "DNS Settings" and press "A".

For the primary DNS server put the following:
208.67.222.222

For the secondary DNS put:

208.67.220.220

Now test your connection and it should work. If not then recheck your IP is the same as the static IP you put in the router.

Sorry for the lengthy post, hopefully it was of some help.
