I just recently got my ps2 modified with a flip top and swap magic 3.6 (cd/dvd). I have read on forums on afterdawn about how Berserk needed to be loaded by using swap magic and cdloader, and not just with the swap magic disc. I received cdloader in a .bin file and converted it to an .iso file and tried it that way. CDLoader V7All would not load, it said "not a valid ps2 disc". What do I need to do to make this game to work in my V4 ps2? What am I doing wrong? Also, when I try to load backups, I get a kind of grinding sound. What can that be from?

The grinding sound could be from the fliptop. Did you have the sounds before.
This thread may help you there to make sure the fliptop is installed correctly. It helped me on my V7.
You need to burn the cdloader.bin to a CD-R, then use your SM 3.6 CD to load it.
1. The CDLOADER program should load and on this screen you should take note of the bottom left corner of the screen. It should say ?PS2 DVD".
2. Press Eject and insert a high toc original such as the GTA or Devil May Cry DVD and press eject to close.
3. Wait about 7 seconds and press x.
4. Once the screen that says "swap dvdr by ea method" comes up swap the high toc original DVD with your dvd-r backup using fliptop/knife trick and press x.
I haven't used cdloader in long time so hope thats the correct procedure.

I burned the CDLoader .bin file onto the CD-R as recommended. I put in the SM CD disc in and tried to load it. It said that it was an invalid PS2 disc. I have seen on the threads posted that different versions of PS2s have different cdloader capabilities. Is that true? If so, where can I try to find a cdloader for a version 4 PS2 because the one I downloaded and burned was cdloader 7.5 Beta. Do I need to burn both the .bin file and image file that comes along with it? I don't know.

I am not sure why its not working for you on your Version PS2
Do you have a usb pen drive or just USB drive
You could then make a folder called SWAPMAGIC on it, and then inside place CDLOADER.ELF and rename it to SWAPMAGIC.ELF all in uppercase
Then load up your SM DVD and it will automatically load the CDLOADER.ELF

I don't know what type of usb connections I have with the PS2. I didn't know there was a difference. They're whatever came originally in the V4 PS2. Also, does it matter whether or not I have a hard drive in the PS2 to what I can or cannot do with the usb connections?

They are 1.1 usb connection, but it doesn't matter.
I use a Kingston usb 2.0 datatraveller, but it will just run at 1.1 speed is all.
And no it doesn't matter if you have a hdd in the PS2. I do in my V7 and still use the usb drive.

I have to look at the specifics of my flash drives. I did what you said on my sony 4gb usb key. I changed everything and put it in the ps2, used the swap magic disc and it would never get to the load program screen. Does it matter which one I use. I have a PNY 1 gb usb key, Memorex 1 gb travel drive which is usb 2.0 (it also has u3), and Lexar 128 mb flash drive. I will try it again, but with the Memorex and see what happens.

It may make a difference on your V4, I am not totally sure.
The USB drive does have to be formatted as FAT.

I got it on the cdloader page using my memorex usb. it loads up and says to change the disc and press x to play. I tried doing it the way that you said earlier and failed miserably. When I change the disc to the Berserk game, it says Error Validating Disc and it goes back to the same change disc screen. I have a feeling I am on the right track, but after the cdloader turns on I tried the higher toc step and it just started playing the game I put in Sonic Mega Collection. I know I am doing something wrong, but I don't know what. Thank you for your patience with me.

I tried the processes again, and got to where it creates a file on memory card and now it is taking its time loading. I hope that it works. I will keep in touch if it does work.

It does create a memory card file, but I waited for 10 minutes for it to load and after that I just gave up. Could it be that the cdloader starts off in PAL format and the game is in NTSC-J format? Or could it also be that the fliptop was installed, but not in the correct way? If that is the case, I am not conscious enough to open it again and try to replace it myself. Also, if that's the case, is there anyone close to Reidsville, NC way that could perform the operation.

Ok if it doesn't work you can also try ESR beta r9a dvdv direct.elf
The only thing with using ESR is you have to patch all your backups with a disc patcher called ESR disc patcher GUI v0.24a
Or if it's not working I never asked how you burned it and too what brand of media.
I am not sure how cdloader.elf works with import games.

I downloaded ESR and the disc patcher to my desktop. The imported game is a real copy, from Japan, that I bought on eBay. The burned games I do have are burned to Memorex DVD-R (4.7gb), now I have Sony DVD-R (4.7gb) discs. Some of them are not recognized by SM and make that grinding sound, but I also use Alcohol 120% to make the ISO files. I don't know how to use ESR, I am totally new to it. If you could tell me how to use it, I would appreciate.

Ok first off Memorex are crap.. You will read that all over this forum if you do a search.
You need to use your Sony Discs. They are much better.
The imported game feature of Swap Magic never seemed to work right.
But the rule was to start Swap Magic, Choose your own region for Video Mode and then swap for the import.
Most people have better luck backing up the Import game and launching it.
If the disc is larger than 4.37gb you will need to do a TOC refresh with an Original PS2 game, then swap for the backup/import.
Here is a guide anyway for SM 3.6
Use Imgburn to make the ISO if they are DVD, use your Alcohol if you wish if they are CD
Now if using ESR you would need to patch the ISO, its really easy and the program has an unpatcher if you ever need to.
Just click the program open, click on Patch and it will open your windows explorer to search for the file.
Find the file and it will tell you if it patched successfully.
Now with your setup the easiest thing to do would be to install fmcb 1.6, then you can just load ESR without swapping discs.
Tutorial to install fmcb to mc using Swap Magic.
You can then load any file from usb drives,memory card, hdd, using uLaunch.elf
But if choose not too do that, you would then have to put uLaunch.elf on the usb drive and rename it so it can launch with Swap Magic.
Then just put ESR r9a elf on the usb drive without renaming it.
Once uLaunch has loaded up, you can take out the disc and put in the patched disc and then using FILEBROWSER, browse to your USB /mass and launch the ESR elf.
Hope that makes sense.

I patched the Berserk backup with the ESR disc patcher. I then burned it to one of the Sony DVD-R. I got the files that were recommended, but the tutorial I didn't understand it much. Does it affect the booting process when there are other items on the FAT-32 flash drive. I've tried it with all the files within the SWAPMAGIC file and it didn't do anything. I tried it with all the files outside of the SWAPMAGIC file and got nothing. Maybe the tutorial was too challenging because some parts were very vague. Maybe it could be explained better without using the tutorial. I don't know. Do I need to put anything on a CDR or DVD-R?

Ok do you mean you are trying to install the fmcb 1.6 now
What I have done below is sort of combined the 2 tutorials as they are both important to the install of fmcb.
If yes.
It should look like this on your usb drive thats formatted as FAT32 so they say.
Then Extract BOOT.ELF from the uLE archive to the SWAPMAGIC folder. and rename it to (case sensitive) SWAPMAGIC.ELF
Now inside the INSTALL folder place it like the following:
Exact filenames as shown above are case sensitive with the default FREEMCB.CNF. If you use different filenames, then it wont work until you configure the FREEMCB.CNF More info on editing the CNF further down in the tutorial.
These files will be listed and linked to run from the Sony main menu .
These files can also be launched during boot-up with the button presses :
* BOOT.ELF ( R1)
* ESR.ELF ( R2)
* HDLOADER.ELF ( L1)
* SMS.ELF ( L2)
* FMCB Configurator ( START )
From here now just go back to the Do it: part in the Swap Magic tutorial.
