i have a celeron 2.8 gig processor with one gig of ram.i have been reading a lot of threads that are complaining of a 2 hour burn time for your average movie.i use 2 pass high quality and from start to finish it takes about 2 hours.this is the same time nero 7 ultra took.i am now using nero 8 ultra.it takes a little longer with a dual layer disc.so how long should it take?

2.66 GHz Pentium 4, 1.5 GB RAM, Windows XP, Nero 8
Have a 2.5 hour long DVD made of home movie clips.
2.5 hours for 2D standard
4.5 hours for 2D animated
7.5 hours for 3D animated

Took the same amount of time when I only had 750 MB RAM. So increasing RAM doesn't fix the burn time. Burn time onto a disk is only about 15 minutes once the files are created on the computer.
Have no idea why the template types make this much differnece on the burn time? Does anybody see the same problem?

mate, as far as I know, the speed of your computer only counts for a little when burning discs, burn time all depends on the speed of your DVD Drive and the speed of the DVD disc.
I have a 20X speed DVD drive but my DVD's are only 16X speed certified so I can only burn them at 16X speed.

For me to burn 1 film in nero 8 ultra, it takes me about 2-3 minutes.

But then again, I have 4GB RAM and a Quad core processor.

Converting files to be DVD compliant and the actual burning to disc are two different things.
The burning speeds are pretty much the same for all computers.
Single Layer(4.7GB) write speeds
4x (CLV) = about 14.5 minutes
6x (CLV/ZCLV) = about 10-12 minutes
8x (PCAV/ZCLV) = about 8-10 minutes
12x (PCAV/ZCLV) = about 6.5-7.5 minutes
16x (CAV/ZCLV) = about 6-7 minutes

Dual/Double Layer(8.5GB) write speeds
2.4x CLV = about 44 minutes
4x CLV = about 27 minutes

99% of all problems are between the computer and the chair.

I'm happy with the 15 minutes to write, my issue is with the file conversion. I don't understand why the file conversion takes so long, or especially why the difference between menu types would hardly affect the file conversion time when creating a DVD of home movies.

File conversion (encoding) times are very CPU intensive, that's just the way it is. Even though you have a fairly fast P4 the times you've listed are in the ballpark. I have a quad core rig and my times are 20-30 minutes. Some programs are faster than others though, Nero I always felt was slow. DVD Flick (free) encoded about the same speed as Nero on my old P4 machine, but ConvertXtoDVD ($$$) took about 30 minutes off the encode times. You might want to try a different program and see if you can cut your times down some...I doubt if you'll cut much off though.

I also have a quad core rig and the programme I use for converting is WinAvi. usually takes about 15-20 minutes and doesn't seem to be very CPU intensive because I once checked it while it was converting and it used only like 4% CPU

But you are spreading out the work over four cores, which are much more efficient. Take the same task on a P4 and watch the CPU max out. I know I couldn't do anything else when I used my P4, even browsing on the internet was difficult.
