Hello. I am considering upgrading my old Dell Dimension XPS T500 w/ Win98, so I can then install WinXP and begin adding more current software that requires XP. The old Dell has a Pentium III, and 256 ram.

Will it work for me to buy a 1Ghz Slot1 processor (as someone has suggested to me), and then buy and install XP? If not, what would be required for this upgrade, or should I just go buy a new computer? Thanks for the help. Tom

You could potentially install a 1Ghz P3, but you might potentially have heat and power concerns. I would suggest getting a cheap new PC.

sammorris, thanks for the reply. I think that a new computer is the way I will go, maybe even a laptop. Too many headaches, time, etc., trying to save the old one. Thanks again. Tom

A p3 will run xp quite well.. as long as you get 380 ram or more. 512 is best, and likely the limit of the board anyway.
Dell tend to grade their processors and mobos.. You most likely will not be able to upgrade the processor as there will be no way to change the clock speed in the bios ;)
For the sake of £10 on some more ram it's a worthwhile investment.. just as long as it isn't a celeron.. those are rubbish.
