Just a question about the Macrovision encrypting on DVD's. Where and how is it decoded when played in a regular standalone DVD player? Is it decoded by the player using the encryption key on the dvd or is the dvd player somehow responsible for it? The reason why I'm curious is that if another method or encryption was used instead, would dvd players have to change or is it solely based on the actual dvd?

The encryption data is writen on the DVD at the time of manufacturing.
There are other encryption formats other than Macrovision I believe, and there will be more.
Just remember, if DVD players can't use a new encryption system, it is unlikely that the studios will use them as it would limit the sale of the DVD!

By the way, you may want to consider using the newbie forum for these type of questions.

Hope this helps.
