Frustrated! What Xp disk to get?

OK, my family PC is really in need of a complete format and reinstalled. Problem is I cannot do this because my friend that built the PC used an XP PRo disk 5 years ago, and I do not have that disk.

I want to do a clean wipe and then install everything from new. Also, I will be building a new PC next year and want an XP disk that I can install now, and then install it on my new PC next year.

Possible? I am only wanting the cheapest XP Home edition instead of PRO.

what Ive heard Xp is no more if you don't own a copy you're out of luck you will be forced to buy Vista Some new Pc will come loaded with Vista and you will get a XP disc to dummy down too. they will support XP for a while longer but they will push this Vista crap on us

If I buy the OEM XP disk, can I use that same disk several times a year when I format my PC?

Yes they are still some left if you can find them but they are left overs and if you want it you better grab it and run !

Now then... it's a licensed installation?

google an xp keyfinder and dump the original xp key (write it down).. then you can use any old xp disk sourced from anywhere to reinstall on the same licence. This one worked for me last week ;) http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/De...KeyFinder.shtml

OEM disks will generally give you problems unless you have the right hardware for them.. and you will probably get an "invalid number" error when you try to install it. Just get xp sp2 from the "usual places.. it's not the disk it's the key that matters.

What about an XP Home upgrade SP2 edition for 99.99 at new egg? Will this work?

So with this Win Keyfinder, as long as I have the disk, I can install on any PC I want?

It finds the original installation key used. With that you can use a generic xp installer disk (even a backup.. no need for an "original" xp disk) and nobody will be any the wiser.
Personally I wouldn't pay out lots and lots for a discontinued piece of software.. no matter what it is.

Shame you didn't post this 2 days ago.. I gave away a proper xp home disk because I have no use for it.
