I have just built a pc on budget with the following:
vista x64
gigabyte ga-p35-ds3l Mboard
q6600 @2.4ghz cpu
xigmatek s1283 cpu cooler w/crossbow & as5 paste
ati radeon hd3870 gpu
8gb corsair ddr2 6400 800mhz ram 320gb WD HDD
corsair VX450w psu
antec 300 case
etc...
In autocad I am fairly happy with the rendering times but it is still very slow to work with when 3d modelling (in wireframe) and switching views. (swivelling the view with a 3d orbit is totally out of the question) My drawings are built up with alot of 3d models. e.g. a social club with a bar, windows curtains, carpets, light fittings and also full of furniture.
I know with my cpu cooler there is room for overclocking the cpu but i will probably only go to 3.0ghz as stability is crucial. (this will help my rendering but not my 'realtime' modelling in viewports)
The files i am opening (40mb) take 5-10 minutes to open.
could my problem be to do with my graphics card? I know that a workstation card such as the firegl would have been better but they are very expensive. I have read about softmodding the 3850/3870 to firegl drivers/capabilities. Apparently this is only working in xp x32 & x64 at the moment. Would this be worth a go, if i ran xp x64 instead of vista x64?
my hd3870 is now running as a firegl v7700 on xp 64bit, but its still shockingly slow. I'm wandering wether it has something to do with the software or drawing, as i think my spec should be able to cope with what i'm asking from it.
If i try to import the drawing into 3dsmax it also takes ages to open, but can actually be rotated when opened. (although i'm not familiar to 3dsmax)
...it was more of a software thing than anything, because the file was so big i was able to uncheck some options in the display to optimize performance. Its perfect now, and 3dsmax is even smoother.
