Hi,

I have a few questions regarding which settings I should use in TMPGenc for encoding MPG2 files for DVD authoring later.

All my questions concern video quality only:

I've only created a few DVD's, all family stuff etc.
Most of it is pretty good quality, but some of the footage is a little pixelated, or slightly blotchy ( Mainly indoor shots in lower
light conditions )

I hope that somebody out there will understand the following questions through there experience and help me through this learning curve.

Thanks

1. Should I use VBR 2 pass or Constant Quality for best results I normally use 2 pas VBR 8k high, 4k low 6k average

2. Is it always better to use 10 bit DC component precision ?? Is there justification for using 8 or 9 bits for some types of
projects ??

3. by default TMPGenc sets my source video to be NON interlaced progressive.
Is this what I should use for captured AVI. All my capture footage is from either a Hi 8 digital camera through firwire or VHS through S video in on a OHCI capture card

4 The setting tell me that my source video ratio is 1:1 VGA Should I use this or should it be one of the 4:3 ratios, eg Pal 625 line 4:3 ( Oh yeah , I live in "PAL" land )

5. I sometime use the de interlace feature and choose 'Even field' to create my MPG2 files. I find that this helps to get rid of the horizontal bleeding lines that appear on a computer CRT screen when objects move accross the screen. Is this a good idea, or does it degrade the end product for the DVD player and TV.

6 Last question. Should I encode the final file as seperate audio and video streams ?
I normally choose to create the. mpg2 file extension. Would I be better off creating
seperate streams

Thanks
Any help, much appreciated

#1) there is No real advantage useing 2-pass cuz CQ will produce the same Quality in Half the time...

#2)10 bit DC component precision is best...

#3)The Non-interlaced setting is Probably the Wrong setting...If you Load your File into TMPGEnc useing the "WiZard" then it will analize the File to see if it is interlaced or Progressive and if it is interlaced it will analize for the Correct Field Order and set it accordingly, if you do Not use the Wizard for this you will Probably have the Wrong setting in which case you will not get the optimum Quality....

#4)You should Use one of the 4:3 Settings if you have a Standard TV Set and 16:9 if you have a Widescreen TV Set...

#5)If you use the Deinterlace Feature then odviously your Files are Not Progressive...interlace artifact should only appear on your Monitor because Monitors are not meant to display interlaced Video and useing a De-interlace Filter actually Makes you Loose 50% of the Video Infomation because One Field is only being displayed....

#6)You will Only Get seperate streams if you choose "LPCM" as the audio Format, This Format is not good for DVD"s Because it can take up to 10 times the DVD-R Disk Space that say "Mpeg1 Layer 2" or "Dolby AC3" so if you can you will get a Much better result if you choose "Mpeg1 Layer 2" audio unless you Plan on encodeing the LPCM File to Dolby AC3 with a seperate Program.....

Good Luck
