Disc Error when playing back-ups??

I've had my Xbox modded with a 200gb hard drive and about 20 backed-up games for over a year now. Recently after playing each of the games for a while the screen will go blank and I'll get an error message of: "There's a problem with the disc you're using. It may be dirty or damaged."
Is there any explanation as to why this would be happening when there isn't any disc being used? And does anyone have a remedy for this issue?

im getin kinda the same prob but once if burnt it on to my verbitams and i put it in my chipped 360 it reads it and says play game thats it, it doesnt say the game name so i click on the play game tab and it trys to boot it up but it doesnt and the message pops up sayin the disc is unreadable plaese clean it can any 1 help

Well that isn't really all that similiar of a problem as I'm playing on an original Xbox, not 360. And I'm playing on games saved to my hdd not burned discs. So I'm getting a dirty or damage disc error even though I'm not playing the games from a disc at all.

Check your PAL/NTSC setting is correct..

That's usually a sign that the disks used to copy the files onto the drive were damaged/corrupt or incomplete.
First thing you must do is try copying an original game (any original game.. doesn't matter what.. a £1 boot sale one will do) to the drive using dvd2xbox and see if the problem continues.
What I do with games on hdd like this is to make disks on a dvd-rw and try ripping them to the drive again.. that usually shows up which files are damaged.

I don't believe the games being damaged/corrupt or incomplete is the case. All games used to burn a copy onto the hdd were store bought retail games. Plus I've been playing these games from my hdd for over a year without any issues what so ever until just recently. All the games will start up and play fine, but a select few of them will get the error I mentioned after playing the games for about 15 to 20 minutes. After a system reset, the games will start up again but the error can still reoccur. Just not sure what could be causing such an issue. I'm wondering if its something that could be corrected by deleting the game and just re-copying it to the hdd. Or is it a hdd issue and eventually the games won't play at all?

You've stated you have a 200Gb drive, as it's under the 250GB limit (where corruption/data loss can occur of 250GB+ drive not formatted correctly) so i'd still suggest having a quick look at the PAL/NTSC setting. I may well be talking pants, it's just i had this problem with one particular game and i resolved it by editing a folder on the hard drive - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/671869/4088951
..from time to time i have the odd problem with a game, more often than not it's due to me having set the PAL/NTSC incorrectly on a particular xbox..

EVERY time I have had a dde from a hdd loaded game while it has been running has been because of something wrong with the files. A there is no way to know which one could be at fault I'm just suggesting the fastest way to find out as dvd2xbox will report a "file failed" error when you try to re-rip.
Other than that as the games are actually loading in the first place I don't think it's anything to do with the pal/ntsc settings.. those being wrong stops the game from loading in the first place usually.. unless they have been ripped wrong and had cutscenes deleted to save space.. with the wrong files being removed. Don't forget to check the IGR setting.. I haven't ever had any problems with it.. but theres always a first time. Then clear out anything in E:\cache.
Lastly the ide cable and hdd are both suspect.. often the cable is just loose..
