Discrepancy Between MPC and Set-Top Player Sync

I only work with srt subs and last week I was viewing a movie on PC with MPC and I noticed the subs showed up about 2 seconds late, so I downloaded SubTitleWorkShop4 and changed the delay by -2 seconds which fixed the problem, but when transcoded and burned to a disc, when I played said movie on any set-top DVD player they were about 2 seconds ahead! What gives?
I noticed that in MPC there is a setting called delay interval which is default 500ms, and it does not accept a negative number, but if I set it to 0ms, that doesn't seem to help either.
I would like to be able to rely on my PC to sync srt subs, but apparently with the way I am currently trying to do it, I can't.
Any suggestions or explanations?
