I have been seeing something that I can't figure out and I would really appreciate some learned feedback.
Ever since I got a Sony Bravia HD TV I have noticed that whereas if I am watching a HD definition source, the picture is incredible. But when watching DVDs or many varieties, both back ups and original discs (comparatively tested), the dark scenes look to have what I can only describe as a grainy layer or "film" in the forefront of the picture. It's so strange. It's like I can see patches in the layer that can be comparred to seeing through a haze. I mean this is common. It's not with every DVD, but at least 70% of them and only happens in dark scenes. What is with this? Shouldn't DVD get a magnificent representation on a digital TV? I have used multiple players and the TV appears excellent otherwise with respect to it's display.
I'm not honestly obsessively "bent" over this fact but within a serious quandary without a doubt.

Could be several things. More then likely it's just because your HDTV is scaling the image to meet it's native resolution. When this is done, typically you end up with a nasty picture. Reason being is you are trying to display a 480p image onto a 1080i/p screen. Now you end up with a pixelated image that's also probably grainy.
What kind of cables are you using? Try using a good set of component (RGB) cables if you aren't using those. Also, you might want to look into getting a DVD upconverter. The upconverter will more then likely do a much better job at scaling the video then your HDTV does. Also, try adjusting all the picture settings on your HDTV. I like to use the "movie" setting on my HDTV when watching DVD's.

Thanks very much for your input. I am using a high quality HDMI cable between the sony dvd player and sony TV. I have also checked viewing between analog connections as compared to the HDMI. No difference. The thing that boggles my mind about the whole thing is that our Phillips plasma in no way shows these characteristics. At least I haven't noticed this like I have on the HD set. As I said previously though, the incoming and resulting HD TV signal is stunning. I wish this TV had the ability to adjust it's pixel processing to lower that 1080.
