Hey rod619
For your antivirus, I highly recommend Antivir, which has the best detection, low resource consumption, and is free!! If you didn't believe me about the detection part, look here : AV-Comparatives
As for a firewall, the only one which is compatible with Vista and worth having is Comodo. It's heavy-duty out and in bound protection.
Note: Antiviruses and firewalls are not enough. There are much other security precautions that you have to take, such as antispyware programs. Spyware beats viruses in the internet nowadays.
Best Regards :D

cdavfrew, I fixed your tags on your link...works now.
I can back up the recommendations given as I too use Avira and have used Comodo in the past. For Spyware detection removal I like Malwarebytes Antimalware, SuperAntiSpyware and Spybot, Search & Destroy. Unlike A/V you can have and use more than one spyware program.

If there is any kind of virus scanner needed it is 100% to be a program called 'Malwarebytes'.Free Search it up in google and download...
Does the job all the time no issues what so ever. And whats more... its FREE!
Second best virus scanner i would say is 'Adaware 2008'. Also free however some viruses disable it from scanning your computer.
Have both if you really want to keep your pc in tip top.
And finally... firewall... I use 'PC tools firewall plus' on Vista and 'Zonealarm' on XP. However these are usually for more experienced users.
If you do download those programs... the site www.processlibrary.com will come in handy.
I think Malwarebytes eats up spyware... so nothing to worry about there...

Comodo for firewall-although it seems to have a stack of apps along with it oddly enough it never affects system performance
Both below have small footprint & use little resources
Avira antivirus
clamwin anitvirus
spywareterminator realtime scanner, light on resources also includes a host intrusion detection if any new app or unidentified app or an app that's making a change or tries to install itself. You need to activate HIPS for that to work & for full strength protection
Avast-Scans every loading app while in boot process & every app you load thereafter including websites you visit so will slow things down somewhat, great for new surfers

i would try avira as it has one of the best detection rates of all a.v programs.(free or premium) also has a resident shield. i use this with my windows firewall and it works well.

I just downloaded Malwarebytes AM , but is is too slow 78000 files after 4 hrs. compared to spy bot ,181k/hr. Is this normal? Is there something wrong the way I downloaded that's why it is too low? I just wanted the malwarebytes to get rid of smitfraud c which both spybot and smitfix failed to get rid.. Thanks
