I have a huge problem. My main computer (I'm on the family computer now) got infected by a virus called Virtumonde. First it changed the background on my computer, and a pop-up window told me I was infected with a virus, and to click 'okay' to download their software to get rid of it. I know better, so I did not click it. I ran several anti-virus programs, even downloaded a couple others off the 'net and ran scans... None of them could locate it. The background was changed to a Warning! screen that said I was affected by Win32/Adware.Virtumonde and Win32/PrivacyRemover.m64.

I went out to Best Buy and purchased some new Antivirus software, but when I got back home the computer had shut down. I turned on the computer and the Welcome screen popped up along with the icon for my account. This confused me, since mine was the only account on the computer and it didn't usually stop on that screen. I clicked on my name, it flashed to the Warning! screen for a second, and logged me back out.

I can't log in to my account to upload the antivirus software. I've tried Safe Mode, and the only difference is that a new account shows up called Administration. I can't log into either the Administration or my own. I've tried running the computer in every other alternate mode that was listed, and nothing has worked.

A friend mentioned running the computer from the CD-DVD drive with the Antivirus software inside.. But I can't find where to do that.

I really, really can't afford to have my computer's memory wiped. Is there a way I can try to manually remove it from the startup screen?

Please, please, please help me...

(As far as my computer's stats go... It's an Insignia and runs on Windows XP. That's all I know.)

Either get the latest virus remover program with the latest updates or remove it manually: http://www.removeadware.com.au/articles/virtumonde/ or http://www.411-spyware.com/remove-win32-adware-virtumonde

hi, I have just got rid of this virus. I tried many of things and nothing worked it kept coming back, but after many frustrating hours i found a program that gets rid of the virus then ran a second program to get rid of the spyware.

The first program i used was Combofix Download, this is a very easy to use program with no installation needed (please note the program when ran may look like it has crashed but hasn't its just doing its thing, once its detected the infection it will reboot your pc and clean it, do NOT use any programs once rebooted until combofix displays the dialog report and has finished, plz dont click the dialog box whilst its running as this WILL slow it down).

The second program i ran was SuperAntiSpyware Download.
This is a simple spyware removal program that will remove the remainder of the spyware.

I Hope this helps for anyone else with the same problem.
Both the programs mentioned are FREE

I'll note again I'm on the family computer, as I flat out cannot use the other computer. Because the virus won't let me get past the Welcome screen, I can't run anything on that computer. Not even MS Word. I can't get to it since I'm stuck at the welcome screen, so internet to download stuff is out of the question.

This also means I can't go into the Start menu to remove it manually.

sorry i posted in the wrong part to many tabs open at once. I have got interested in this since reading your post.
You can run the CD-DVD before boot using the bios. to enter the bios enter (esc or F1 normally) when it does the hardware check at startup.
Once in the bios change the first boot device to your CD-DVD drive with the disk in, then change the second boot device to your system hard drive. don't change anything else then save and exit. the coputer will now restart and try boot from the cd (basicly run it). i have a feeling this may not work but i hope it does. if it dosn't boot from the CD-DVD it will try booting your system normally using the hard drive.

wiki information Link for Virtumonde or Vundo.
