Brand new at this, please excuse the ignorance:
I just bought a laptop with a BlueRay drive and a HDMI output in order to play the movies on my hdtv.

I get a "uncompatable" message when I try to play a Blue Ray disk. A regular DVD plays fine???.........

Ay help would be appreciated!

Is this message on the laptop or the HDTV.
I pressume its on the HDTV since I doubt you are able to have the bluray displayed simualtaneously.
What resolution have you got the laptop set to output at.
I would imagine it has some default settings for HDTV output such as 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080.
Or is it outputting at some other resolution.
On some HDTV's they will not accept resolutions via HDMI that are not standard for HD. Not sure why it plays DVD's then though.
We need more info on res and bluray playback software.

This message is on the laptop.........it is a Asus M70Vm-C1: It has a nvida GeForce 9600M GS video card4 The resolution is set at 1920x1200.... Microsoft Vista Home Premium

I wish I could give you the message, but my disks come from Netflix and I am between arrivals at the moment....The best I can remember it is something abour DRM... I am not tying to rip or burn anything, only watch them onthe TV...I will have another Blue Ray disk in a day or two and will be able to supply the exact message..

Thank you byango for responding, really appreciate it!!

Well I've heard vista can be a Baxxxrd with DRM (Digital Rights Management).
You did not say what software you are using to play back the Bluray.
I don't think Windows Media Player can play them.
I use PowerDVD which I assume came bundled on the laptop.
If the laptop will play the bluray's on its own then its not DRM.
There's a slight chance it could be HDCP compliance and would mean that perhaps your LCD is not HDCP compliant but if its a HDTV it should be.
Your resolution should be set at either 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 depending on the native res of your HDTV.
If possible set a custom res to match the HDTV's native res which might be 1366 x 768.
Also you should try and use a single display at one time. (either the laptop or the HDTV. Either the graphics card, Video software or both wont like trying to send a picture to both displays at the same time. Especiallt with Bluray and various other Nvidia restrictions.

Thank you guys for the input.

It took several days to receive more Blue-Ray discs.... They still would not play..

Took Spiderman to Best Buy, they booted it right up on one of their machines...called Asus help......no idea, said they would mail me new software someday...

Found a trial program called AnyDVD HD on line....tried it and both the DVD's I have here played and even played on the big screen tv....

I still think I'm missing something....difficult to believe Asus would ship a laptop out that did not work as advertised...

The problem that you're having is probably with HDCP. Even though your laptop came with a BD player it is probably unable to output HD content without some help. My laptop doesn't even have a Blu-Ray player but it shipped with an HDMI cable. When I added a BD player I had already planned on using AnyDVD HD since I already have a licensed copy, and I knew that I would need it to get around HDCP. You will probably need to continue to use AnyDVD to keep your laptop from being affected by HDCP requirements.
