I have been having problems with my Samsung vr-330 dvd recorder/VCR player so thinking of replacing. I am wondering if it would be better in terms of DVD recorder quality to get a standalone and then just get a VCR player? In other word do standalone DVD recorders tend to be better than when in combo format?

I've had the best luck with a $29.99 Toshiba stand alone DVD player purchased from HH Gregg during one of their grand opening sales. I've heard other people mention that the cheapie units tend to play disks better than the high end ones, I have a combo Sony DVD/VCR which has fits with the newer 16X media. Just my humble opinion. I also own a Samsung DVD R-120 unit which plays anything I throw at it, the only downside, it will record only on -R media. I'm still working my way thru a 15 pack of DVD-RW media I purchased with the unit 2 1/2 years ago, they seem to last forever. I've never priced a combo unit such as yours, but I'll be willing to bet, looking at sales now you could purchase one of each brand new cheaper than what you payed for the combo...
