Why won't Vista access XP?

I'm trying desperately to set up file and printer sharing but it's just not happening.

The setup:
Desktop PC Vista 64 Ultimate
Laptop Win XP pro 32 bit

Wireless Router

Desktop connected to router via ethernet cable, laptop via wi-fi.

Using the XP laptop, I can fully access Vista and the shared files.
Using Vista on the desktop, I can see the laptop in the network but I get a Network Access error: "Windows cannot access \\LAPTOP"

What the hell is going on here? It's starting to drive me crazy!!!
