[SONY] = crap
[TDK] = crap
[MEMOREX] = crap
[MAXELL] = crap
the list goes on, the only GOOD advice i hear nowadays is Verbatims and the TY brand, i will give those a try and the only way to tell is time.

Can't speak for Verbatims, but I do know that a lot of people have great luck with them. As for Ty's I have personally had great success with them. I think you would be very pleased either way.

sony 16x + are excellent, I prefer those to verbatims. All the movie backups I have done have worked perfectly on different standalone dvd players and computers.
1. TY 8x- premiums
2. verbatims 16X+
3. sony 16X+
Those are the 3 reliables for me, all the other brands sometimes outsource and you never know what you get.

I personally have had excellent success with TDK+R media. My success rate with them has been around 96-98%.

It's ok bro. Only a few know TDK's are my favorite. I am almost finished with my last purchase of 400 disks. Only 1 bad burn in the bunch.

Many of those sublet the production of their discs, thus resulting in an array of possible dyes.
Sony, are typically pretty good. If you're lucky enough to come across some MIJ Sony's...those are great.
TDK RTM has had good luck with, i have not.
Memorex typically code out as CMC MAG which are bottom of the barrel of blank media, for DVD's anyway.
The Maxwell's i haven't used too much of, so i don't have much of an an opinion on those.
My blank media stash typically consists of Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Sony, and some Office Depot discs that code out as RICHOJPN RO3's which i've found to produce good quality burns.

In your listing of different brands, only Taiyo Yuden is an actual manufacturer. All others--Maxell, Memorex, Ricoh, Sony, TDK, and Verbatim--"outsource" from other manufacturers.
Ritek makes Maxell, Memorex, and Ricoh.
CMC makes Memorex, Imation, HP, TDK, Verbatim, and many others.
Verbatim are also made in Singapore and India (Moser Bayer).
Sony are likely made by Prodisc; but I've been out of the loop for almost a year, and I'm not sure.
If the disc is made in Japan, Taiyo Yuden probably made it. No one else of significance is left there.

Is that why the MIJ Sony's are so hard to find now?
Some assembly required.
