New idea, well, maybe...

I think it is a new idea since I can't find one online.

instead of virtual CD/DVD drive software, why not make a drive that runs images off an external or small internal hard-drive.

This solves the problem of wanting to get rid of all my CD/DVDs. If it can run as a boot from bios then you will not have to have a real OS Disk either.

This would make my life much easier since I hate storing a million back-up disks, and the never ending quest to find that certain cd.

All you need is the OS iso and you can keep the original disk in a safe place where you only keep it as a back-up.

Anyone know of a product like this on the market, or can think of a way for me to start jerry-rigging one up.

I am a computer science major and I am not sure how the internal mechanic of a dvd drive work.

Understood.

I will be doing more research on how I would make something like this.
I think I will start with the software that will communicate between the drive hardware and the motherboard itself through, firewire, PCI, or usb, I wonder if I could set it up so that an external HD could plug into this img drive. I could store the software on that drive also.

ok I will post after I get some idea on how to do this. The main problem here is that I have only learned how to make software for an OS. It will be difficult if I have to program some type of computer language. (the whole 0s and 1s thing)

Buy an old xbox.. stick a chip in it and add a large hdd... then you can dump all your films and music and pictures straight to it ;) iso files are too big.. the same quality as an avi is 25-30% of the size.. mpeg2 is a very old and bulky standard.

That's what I use them for, and they will even handle sopcast and streamed media. You are trying to re-invent the wheel there.. and I can guarantee you will hit hardware and software patent problems.. that's apart from the fact it is illegal in most of the world to actually break the encryption and protection on commercial dvd's....
Fine for an underground freeware merchant like LightningUK.. and Antigua payware leeches like slysoft.. but as for selling hardware with it built in as a function?.. have your wallet ready to pay for the css licence... they will want big bucks... if you can get around the patent problems.

Thanks for the idea with the old xbox. I think I will try that out with it.

but I still want to develop my idea.

I am a college student and all our software comes free to download in iso format. I get tired of burning these programs, because I loose the disk. This is why I want to make a iso boot drive.
I have no intention of illegally breaking protection laws.

but I do have one question.

Is making an iso copy of a disk that is not protected illegal?
