Been an interesting couple of days. Found out a few things that might be of use to the group.

1) The machines are easy to fix for the most part especially since there are only a couple moving parts and a couple boards.

2) Burner replacement is similar to the Liteons though I have yet to fit a burner back into the case. Perhaps one of the new slimline burners might go in easier as it's hard to find the Packard Bell loader (burner) as a replacement. Old LG, Liteon and Sony drives up to 18X should work fine. Just extend the cables outside the case and fire them up.

3) Hard drive upgrades are a snap! Drop in a new drive and the machine will format it to make it compatible with the recorder. Pretty simple, no? Have tried this with an old 60 Gig I had lying around and it works great. Now to get a 250 or 400 Gig and see if that works as well. Standard IDE and no jumpers.

There are some quirks to these machines though.

1) Copy once content like shows from HBO cannot be off loaded to the burner. You MIGHT be able to get it off the HDD using a drive adapter and hooking it up to the computer. I can do this for some content but not for other content. No idea why but I'm still working on that.

2) Macrovision detection is present so no copying of macrovission protected material is possible directly.

3) If the editing function doesn't work then upgrade to the new firmware and reformat the drive. It'll work okay then. Using an old drive with content won't work as I've tried those in 2 machines that were upgraded so that means that something is being written to the HDD to allow that function to work. Formatting the drive means that your recordings are lost (unfortunately).

These are nice little machines that work very well when you get them set up the way YOU want them to work. They can be had cheaply from liquidators, Ebay, pawn shops, etc. as people dump them when they start to act up. But we can restore them now can't we? The last units I got off Ebay cost me less than 5 bucks for 2 units with the HDD drives! I repaired them with parts I had lying around here. Normal retail on a new one is over $200 each! Time to go look for another unit....
