I was given a win xp tower that was working up until it was given to me. The owner had removed an 80 gig hard drive he had installed and gave me the 20 gig that had been installed. It was working with the 20 before he had replaced it. I was told to simply reinstall it and I was good to go. The issue is that although the desktop appears with all the icons, I can choose an icon, it responds, but the accociated program does NOT open. Weather it be an internal program like a media player, or an external one like IE or YAHOO. The browser is displayed but no page. What can I do to re-establish a net connection? My modem can work with up to 4 towers. This will be my back up. Certain internal choices work such as the start menu, control panel. all programs, system restore( that does NOT work). But the choices made under certain icons in the control panel also do NOT respond. Should I rerun my ATT dsl install disc? Beyond that I cannot think of anything else to do. A shop is next I guess. Next issue concerns a COMPAQ EN flattop(horizontal). This is running win 98. It is fully functional except that it is very slow. I installed a 20 gig hard drive that I took from a non working GATEWAY running win ME. Speed increased but again NO net connection although ALL the internal choices work almost as fast as xp. Should I look for another 98 hard drive? I can get one easily. I tried running my DSL disc but an error mess "NO nic card or software present". Reuuing 98 hdd solves that problem. Does that mean that XP,ME, or 2000 are NOT compatible with this computer? Solutions please.
what is the make & model# of the computer or motherboard? is that a fresh install of windows on the 20gig drive? what does it show for network adapters in device manager on the laptop?
this is NOT alaptop. a tower. All I did was reinstall the 20 gig. No net connection. The program of choice simply will not open. HP pavillion A305. My tech friend has it.
If you took 20 gig drive out and did not use it, they some times will not work when you reinstall them. you will need to reformat and re install windows, something happens to them when there is no power to the drive. It's windows way of knowing you are changing hard drives, so you can't put the same OS on a different PC's
My tech friend is going to take care of this as well as 3 other of my towers. As an experiment I exhanged a win 98 flat machine that was running very slow, for a hdd I snagged from a win ME unit. Thew 98 recognized the hdd , speed increased, but NO internet connection using my existing modem. I put the 98 hdd back and this unit is now a 5th level back up. My primary ad secondary towers also lost internet connection, on their own suddenly and without my intervention. At first I thought it was my service but that turned out not to be the case as my backup tower worked instantly. Computers are way to finicky for my taste. I do not know why the two hdd worked in the same of different towers. That is contradictory to what you said to me. I will let my frind take care of these issues. Beyond my capabilities.
