AVG didnt report any virus in a file I downloaded but when I extracted and inspected everything before installation I started getting virus alert warnings. Make a long story short, I ran Spybot, and AVG, I rid myself of all offending files and the restore points shown to hide traces of the trojan. Things "seem" OK but every 5-10 times I logon to internet with firefox my homepage is changed to lookanddiscover.com.
I can change it and I have regular use of my comnputer, but it always changes back after a while. Heres HJT log

Hi Deadrum23
Now, please download ComboFix.
With ComboFix, at the download window, please rename it to Combo-Fix(.exe) before downloading it.
Please disable all security programs, such as antiviruses, antispywares, and firewalls.
Also disable your internet connection.
? Run Combo-Fix.exe and follow the prompts.
**Understand that things like your system clock changing and your desktop disappearing might happen. Do not worry, because all will be restored later.
? Wait for the scan to be completed.
? If it requires a reboot, please do it.
? After the scan has completed entirely, please post the log here. The log will be located at C:\ComboFix(.txt)
Do not click on the ComoboFix window, as it may cause it to stall.
Best Regards :D

Thanks for the response cdavfrew... here is the log. I see the home page redirection in the supplementary scan, and the AskTBAr in C:\Program Files looks suspicious, just not sure what the best removal method may be.
Anyway here it is, thanks again.

Hey Deadrum33
Please download Superantispyware Free and install it. Follow the prompts and reboot if required.
Launch Superantispyware Free either by running C:\Program Files\SUPERANTISPYWARE.exe or right-click on the SuperAntispyware icon in your task bar (it looks like a bug) and click on Scan for Spyware, Adware, Malware...
Configuring SuperAntispyware
? Click on Preferences.
? In the tab General and Startup, make sure the box Start SuperAntispyware when Windows starts is unchecked. This will prevent SuperAntispyware from starting everytime, because it may interfere with other fixes that may be run.
? Navigate to the tab Scanning Control.
? Make sure only these boxes are checked:
Close browsers before scanning
Scan for tracking cookies
Terminate memory threats before quarantining
Scan Alternate Data Streams
Use Kernel Direct File Access (recommended)
Use Kernel Direct Registry Access (recommended)
Use Direct Disk Access (recommended)
? Click on Close.
Updating SuperAntispyware
? At the main window, click on Check for Updates....
? Wait for SuperAntispyware to be fully updated.
Scanning Time
? Boot into safe mode by repeatedly pressing the F8 key after you press the power button. If safe mode does not work, tell me and do the scan in normal mode.
? Launch SuperAntispyware.
? At the main window, click on Scan your Computer....
? Make sure all drives (excluding CD drives) are checked, select Perform Complete Scan, and then click on Next.
? Wait for the scan to complete, and then click on Next>. This will quarantine and remove all detected items.
? Reboot your computer.
Post A Log
? Launch SuperAntispyware
? Click on Preferences
? Navigate to the tab Statistics/Logs.
? Choose the latest scan log, and the click on View Log....
? Copy and paste the contents of the log here in your next post.
Best Regards :D

Looks like they didnt find anything.
When I was searching for that file to send, I seen a file with the same name (except the last numbers) the same size, same time and date modified as the file you had me check. Just for fun I sent that also, heres its results...

Hey Deadrum23
Please download A-squared Free, update it, and do a full scan only without fixing anything. Post the log here.
Please download Advanced Windowscare Personal, update it, do a scan, and fix everything except Startup Manage.
After that, post a new HijackThis log as well.
Best Regards :D

Hey Deadrum33
Please upload these files to VirusTotal. Post the results here.

Also, have you run Advanced Windowscare? Try changing your homepage again. Does it work fine?

Funny thing about these files, they werent even on my system when I encountered problems. X:\WD500 is a new partition I recently imported from a different computer on my home network. In fact, both those applications came from their parent sites webpage, not some unknown torrent!!!
Also, have you run Advanced Windowscare? YEs, I followed the steps in your previous post in the exact order you posted them.
Try changing your homepage again. Does it work fine? It still changed after I ran superantispyware, and I didnt reset the page before I ran the last scans. I set it after I ran Advanced windowscare personal and it hasnt changed yet.
Best Regards :D
And cheers to you for the continued support!

Well it didnt last long, home page is still being hijacked, FFox and IE
I did some extra google searching, and theres not much info on this lookanddiscover.com but the one other forum dealing with this same problem advised using yet a different spyware program "Malwarebytes antimalware" and it actually showed different results than any others.
Registry Data Items Infected:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Start Page (Hijack.Homepage) -> Bad: (http://www.lookanddiscover.com/) Good: (http://www.google.com/) -> No action taken.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Start Page\Start Page (Hijack.Homepage) -> Bad: (http://www.lookanddiscover.com/) Good: (http://www.google.com/) -> No action taken.
I choose to remove them, everything works and my computer reboots. Once the machine starts back up, the hijack page is back. If I run that program again the same values show.
Do we have any other tricks up our sleeves aside from clean install of windows?

Hey Deadrum33
Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As") to download Silent Runners.
? Save it to the desktop.
? Run Silent Runners by double-clicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
? You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
? Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click the new text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
Best Regards :D

Hey Deadrum33
Your log is clean.... puzzles me.
Let's try to see just exactly what is changing your homepage. Enable Teatimer in Spybot. Change your homepage, and see whether Teatimer detects what changes it back to lookanddiscover.com
Best Regards :D

Maybe it's worth checking out this thread at the firefox forums.
I had also a problem with these trojans, but I removed them with a combination of Hijackthis (search & fix n the normal mode) and Malwarebytes (search & remove as admin in the security mode).
Good luck!

thank you for reviving this post with additional information.
in the nearly 2 months since my last post I had given up on the problem and reinstalled my OS since I needed to fix my Master Boot Record anyway after deleting the other OS I was dual booting.
On a lighter note, the whole process taught me some good ways to fix problems like this and has earned me a few cases of beer cleaning friends PC's!

Hey, lookanddiscover this...
I had that trojan infection today. It's nasty. It changed the home page on firefox and IE7 repeatedly.
I had "Eset smart security" as my "protection". It let this trojan onto the system and completely failed to detect it. So then I installed spybot S&D and that also failed to detect. Then I installed trial for ad-aware and that failed to detect.
So I wiped them all including Eset and went back to Kaspersky Internet Security (I had been using kaspersky for a year until my license ran out after which I switched to Eset). After installing Kaspersky, it immediately detected a trojan in the winsched.exe
http://www.prevx.com/filenames/135955792...SCHED2EEXE.html
I told it to delete and the system is ok at the moment but I have to reboot and see if the infection stays gone.

I can now confirm that Kaspersky Internet Security Suite 9 trial did in fact kill that winshed.exe (wwww.lookanddiscover.com) trojan effectively.
The trojan was in a software download. Kaspersky killed that as well.

Good to know that updated programs can now fix the root cause and not just clean up its effects like when I was going through the problems.
Thanks for posting extra info feathers6
