Nero 7 Cannot burn a data dvd: device not available

I am totally new to making any type of cd or dvd's. I have a external burner but I can't seem to get it to make a data dvd. Everything works out until i hit but and within 4 seconds the burner ejects and i get an error message...device not available. what does that mean and how do i fix it? I have read other solutions so I am currently performing a defrag and all the other programs are shut off. please help.
