I am in need of some help. I do not have much info on the problem so here is what I have. My computer got shutdown improperly and and now I cant get it to boot up. When I hit the power button, it boots up to the Windows was shut down improperly screen. So I choose to start windows normally and then it reboots. I tried safe mode but again reboots. I do not want to reformat since no data was saved. What are my options?

On a power outage sometimes the Master Boot Record (MSB) gets damaged. This is what you need to do. Note: Do not format the HDD.

1) Put in the XP Pro CD. and boot from the CD like you were going to put the operating system on.

2) After the CD checks your system and is in the ready mode to install the OS. Make sure that your current OS is selected and press "R" without the quotes. The R is for Restore of the current system.

4) You will have to wait for a short time. Do not press anything while the CD is reading, and loading the necessary information to the HDD.

5) When you get a C:\ prompt type, "chkdisk /r" without the quotes of course. Notice that the chkdisk is one work then there is a space and then the /r.

6) Wait until this is done, then type, "fixmbr" without the quotes. This will repair or fix your Master Boot Record. After this is done and you are back to the C:\ type "exit" without the quotes and your system should restart without a problem.

Please note that you may have to wait until you get the C:\ prompt before trying to proceed. I had the exact same thing happen not to long ago and it took me through a long search to find out how to fix the problem. FDISK does not work properly with an NTF system.
