What is the best format to store ripped DVDs on an HD?

I am making progress in the DVD ripping area but am wondering what the best format would be to store DVD backups on an HD? VOB's are huge, but I am sure offer the best quality. Stepping down (via compression) from VOBs, what is the best compromise between quality and file size? Thanks! By the way, this forum ROCKS!

Stick with what you've got and make allowances for file sizes! You might need ever bigger HDD's but it's worth the hassle imho.
