Hey to all. My main machine had an ecs elitegroup 865PE-A ver 2 socket 478 mobo, a cap had blown which gave me shorter "on" time as time went on. Eventually it gave way and all that could be viewed was a blue screen with error messages. After a few months trying to find a suitable 478 socket board, I got lucky and have an Asrock (Asus ?) P4165g on hold. The proposed mobo has three pci slots..that's ok. It's got an agp slot..that's ok....but only two slots for RAM. Herein lies my problem... I have four sticks of (Team) DDR400Mgz RAM @512 each, which I don't mind pensioning off for better sticks, but...there's talk of replacing the cpu for better, as IT may be compromised due to the symptoms described. Your thoughts please guy's.

Given the chance of similar options of resurrecting a "dinosaur".. what do you think my best/better options are?
The current cpu is a single core (intel) 3.2 Ghz (thanks to Russ and Sam for previous advice) this little gem was never overclocked...LOL

Cheers.

478 is such an old socket, you may as well make an upgrade of it, with a cheap Intel Pentium Dual core system.

Cheap is right sam. I could hardly believe how much the prices have dropped over the last four or so years. As much as I hate it..I'll spend just enough to get her back up and running, and spend where it counts on a new system.

@pcrepair Thanks also for the links.

Cheers all.

If its a blown capacitor you could try to replace that yourself on the board.

Now that's good news. I've heard that when a PSU goes, it can take other components with it but was unsure about mobo's. Btw, the price on that replacement P4165g mobo is $Aud105.00 which is a little steep considering it's a 478. Can't grumble too much I guess, at least I found one.

@core2kid. Yep that scenario had already crossed my mind, but the thought of others going due to their age and condition doesn't inspire my confidence....LOL But in all fairness core2, we are talking pocket change for a few capacitors. :)

Yea, It's rare for capacitors to blow though. It could have just been a bad capacitor. Attempt to replace it in my opinion. What have you got to lose, except pocket change that could potentially save a paycheck ;)

If I had a spare p4 cpu, I could frankenstein something I guess..just to see what happens. Gawd knows I've got enough old bits hanging around to make up some "thing". Could run Sandra continuously to see how long it takes to crack lol.
