My current apps running when i run xp is 17 programs if you remove firefox.. i actually get like 19 programs like userinit.exe when i just load xp and some other program but they go away after a little while so then im just stuck with 17..
heres what i get when i do ctrl alt delete(take away firefox):
then i saw someone elses configuration and saw he was only running like 12 apps:
i have turned off all apps running except ms apps in the msconfig and disabled every startup app and im still with 17 apps running.. is there a way to know the only apps i need to run xp and how to disable the other ones i dont need?
May I ask why you need to strip down your system? Just a question...
Try booting in safe mode for the optimum stripped-down state of xp. Of course, it isn't very practical and functional, but that's basically what you get when you try to disable as many apps as possible.
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:
? Restart your computer
? After pressing the power button, repeatedly tap the F8 key.
? Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
? Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
? Choose the administrator's account.
Life is but a dream; you dont feel any pain unless you want to or you fall off the bed. Success is relative; the more success the more relatives.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kickboxing. To be or not to be; thats a dumb question.

I wonder how many trojans and other hidden processes are running on those machines ;)
lol im pretty sure its 0, my OS looks the same since when i installed it about a year ago.. i know how to safely use the internet, i dont go around downloading attachments or dling MILEYXXX.exe files or visiting sites with generic words in google search :).. all i need is windows firewall and thats about it.. heres all my apps currently running according to hijack this:

as for other questions.. i just need to run the least apps possible because im only on 256mb of ram and when i run firefox it takes up along 230mb of ram along with xp.. when i try to close firefox it takes about 20 seconds on this slow pc.. thats why i need to run only necesary xp programs :)
Edit: heres my desktop, had to install spybot and adaware because i let someone borrow my flash drive and they infected it with a trojan, i formatted the flash drive and got rid of the small trojan with ease :)
To name a few which will install malware or hijack your browser without your permission unless you have some kind of firewall and/or anti spyware shield running.
Don't you know that there are things which will actively hide from task manager... or pretend to be valid processes.. (svchost running from anywhere BUT windows\system32) or in a few extreme cases actually replace the real process and run other things? Does the checksum on csrss.exe match the one from when it was installed (duuuh.. what??)
I was nice and dropped links.. I could have embedded malware containing images.. at which point you have whatever trojan I decided to pass out.. because your browser would happily display it.. and then it's too late ;)
you think formatting destroys files?.. not all of 'em it doesn't.. In fact all formatting does is wipes the file table.. leaving all the data on there and if it's the right kind of virus is will spring up as soon as it's read past.
At least you have adaware and spybot there so you can use them if you get suspicious... and windows firewall is OK I suppose.. it's as good as any of the others. I think you minimalists should check out the malware removal section and see how people got the malware that gives them the hardest time... most haven't actually knowingly downloaded anything nasty.
