Further to my last two threads, my Starview pvr (twin tuner)
now does not recognise HDD, cant update firmware and now cant get EPG.
Was new in January, but bought off internet and cant find paperwork.
Is it worth repairing and if so does anybody know where in S.London,Kent or Surrey?
Thanks once again!

Hi
Don't give up yet, don't know if we've had communication about it yet, but here goes with a few things to try, thats if you want to. Disconnect the hard drive and unplug it, then try an RS232 comport null modem firmware upgrade with v4.506.
Please NO USB adaptor/converter stuff for F/W upgrade at this stage.
Have you ever managed to change the Firmware previously on this PVR? if not you need to access another PC and another null modem cable to try to eliminate a connection problem.
Thats a starter for you, get back to me with your update.

Thanks jbvid,
Must admit, have only been using a USB cable to do FW upgrade, will try with serial.
Haven't upgraded FW before, as it came with 4.506, just clutching at straws I suppose.
Will get another pooter with serial and try over the weekend.
Thanks again.

Got a serial cable, but it still won't upgrade firmware, it still states that 'NO HDD installed'!
Another problem has arisen that the HD still runs with the box off.
(but turns off with the switch on the back)

Have been trying using the following method:-
2. Serial Download
1) Connect PC & STB with Serial Cable
2) Off & On with A/C Power on the rear panel.
3) Once display ? on ? on the front panel,
Press ? OK->Exit->OK->Exit->OK->Exit ? on the RCU.
4) Display ?B-30 or B-31? ( ready to download message ) on the front panel.
5) Access the ?PVR Loader v3.36 Sep 7 2005.exe? Select new Firmware
6) Download.
7) Automatically upgraded & re-boot

Doesn't get to No. 4
Any easy fixes?
Or is there anybody that repairs these.

Many thanks -again!

Hi
Why don't you just disconnect and forget the hard drive to start with and try putting new firmware into the box first. (No H/D Fitted)
Then make REALLY sure you are using a 'Null Modem Cable' not a serial cable or you'll never do it. If you have not had a successfull transfer with this cable you must check it with a meter or bulb and battery, end to end. Pin 2 to pin 3 - pin 3 to pin 2 - pin 5 to pin 5, only three connections needed on a Null Modem Cable.
You said in an earlier post that you transferred via USB ok . If this works disconnect/ remove your hard drive, and forget it for a while. reinstall a different version F/W then check in the menu system to see if the F/W version has changed. If ok buy another Hard drive and make sure its set to Master and connected it correctly inside the box.

Some sellers will sell you anything and call them serial or whatever cables you ask for because they don't know what one is. I would still check it with a meter or bulb before spending on another one.

Serial RS232 Cable (straight) wired serial cable
RS232 serial leads are commonly found on connections between peripheral equipment such as modems and a PC, although there are many other uses. Pins are connected 1 to 1, 2 to 2, 3 to 3 etc making this a (straight-wired cable).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Serial Null Modem cable = (cross) wired serial cable
Null Modem serial leads are commonly found on connections between two PCs to allow data transfer and basic networking, although there are many other uses. Pins are connected reverse layout.
Pin are connected 2-3, 3-2, 5-5 only, making this a (cross wired cable) .

Bought a Null Modem Cable, but still no joy.
After turning off/on with switch on the back, all that happens is the radio graphic page appears while the cursor goes around it's box.
It then just turns on.
The computer doesn't see the box or hard drive.
Although its still scans OK and gets all channels. -weird, think it'll have to go to the nearest skip......
Thanks for the replies though.
