Hi
If its not the latest USB Starview 4 then you may need to load the latest F/W (Firm Ware) v4.506 Oct it is in the 'eko.4shared' link below, To find your present Software version press Menu/System Setup/System Information.
No need for any memory, it records to an internal Hard Drive (room inside PVR to fit one). Need to buy one unless already fitted.

Goto the TheBox PVR Folder for F/W and Documentation Folder for How too's

Hi
It will say Starview 4 USB on the box if its the latest, use Google for 'Starview PVR' to find some pictures and info then do some reading on the forum about PVR's first otherwise you will be struggling.

Hi
You don't need any ram, Before going shopping see if your PVR takes a hard drive (take the top off and have a look) you need a IDE standard PC type hard drive about 120gb is plenty big enough, any popular make. With the lid off the PVR you will see where it fits, same as fitting to a PC. (Ribbon cable and 4 pin power lead, loose inside PVR)
You should seriously take my advice and do a lot more reading in previous threads about this PVR first because you will more than likely need a Null modem cable for PC to PVR Firmware upgrade transfer. The PVR's usually comes with FTA firmware installed ie no premium channels viewable.

Apologies if I'm jumping all over a thread here...

But I'm a newbie trying to get a grasp on the different PVR's...

I read before about a starview box that had twin tuners and so that would allow me to record one channel while watching another..
Now it seems that the original box I was reading about is no longer available/supported...
So, the new one that replaced it is the Starview 4 USB .. is that correct?
Does anyone know if the Starview 4 USB actually still has the twin tuners idea? I can't see it mentioned in the advertising for them around the place... just "pause and record"... or is that the same thing?

Thanks
Vida

Hi
Yes you may find a second hand Starview PVR around which does have twin tuners but the new Starview 4 USB only has one tuner and can record to an external optional usb hard drive and a usb stick for F/W upgrade/data transfer, pause/record is as stated, you are able to pause a recording eg for the stopping of unwanted adverts then record again when ads over.

Fair enough,
Thanks very much for clearing that up.
So, is there no recent box that offers the twin tuner funtionality..
Was the twin tuner option not popular?
Thanks

Hi
Yes the S/V PVR twin tuner version was good and popular, there were a few teething probs with the firmware and updates were slow to be released, very infrequent. Eurovox is supposed to be going to a twin PVR version but at present its a single tuner. Humax do some twin tuner versions you could have a look at them, just google 'Humax PVR' or 'Twin tuner PVR'

Okay, so I had a look around for twin tuner boxes...

Found this Abcom box on satkings.org...
http://www.satkings.org/forum/portal.php

The blurb about it is there on that page...
Looking at the info it says:
"Simultaneous recording of two channels of one TP while watch 3rd Channel"
What does this mean exactly? Whats a TP ? To my untrained eye it would appear to be what I'm looking for but I'm confused cos this doesn't have two tuners does it?

Thanks

Hi
No, sorry, this won't do for you at its a Satellite receiver which requires a Dish, and its single tuner.
You can think of a transponder as a transmitter sending signals to your PVR down the Cable or to a dish then to a Satellite receiver.
Each of the different transponder/transmitters sends its own group of programs or channels.
TBO I think you may be struggling to find a Twin Tuner PVR for Cable at present.

Doh! Satellite is it? Drat...

Sorry for wasting your time... I'm doing my best and reading all I can find.. but am definitely getting a bit boggled with all the TLA's.. heh...

Yeah, I dunno what the hell I'm lookin for really.. twin tuner cable boxes seem to be gone out of fashion.. and now i hear that NTL are going to be changing all their encryption in November.. so maybe I should just buy a cheap box for now and hope that it will be able to cope with the changes...
The guys at satkings are all saying just buy one of them itgate boxes... cos they are linux and should be better able to cope with the nagra (is it?) changes..

I dunno.. still scratchin me head really.. heh..

Anyway, thanks for your help (and patience....)
And if you hve a few pages that I should go and read please let me know.. have dug though wikipedia so i know what DVB-C and DVB-T mean.. but after that I'll take any advice...

Hi
Looks like you've done your homework, nice to see it, TBO Linux is the way forward for Cable or Sat, Dreambox for one springs to mine, I have a couple of dm500 clones, one Sat one Cable and can't fault them, bit more of a leaning curve with linux boxes with Lan connection etc. The dm600pvr may suit you (Cable or Sat tuner) or if pennies allow the more expensive HD dm800pvr (Cable or Sat tuner)

Ahh yeah , don't have a HD tv so probably no point in going that direction for now..
THose dreamboxes are single tuner too eh?
Yeah, think I might go for the itgate TGM220.. only because a friend of mine has one and I've seen it in the flesh..
But then again will have to wait until NTL get their asses in gear to actually come and connect me (its going take 3 weeks to 'enter your address on the system') so I can see what kind of box they supply me with.. dunno if it'll be dvb-c or not and dunno if its nagra-2 or not...
Will just have to sit tight till then I suppose... missing the bloomin heineken cup tho... sigh...

Thanks for your help,
Vida
