here is my situation, please bear with me. i have a western digital 160gb internal hd that i started having problems with a while back so i replaced it with another wd hd. i think the old hd is still good but i'm wanting to use it either as a slave drive or put it in an external enclosure. ive tried both and when i restart my computer it shows up under "found new hardware" and it even shows in "device manager" but it never shows up under "my computer." i was wondering since this old drive used to be my C drive could that be causing some problems (IF in fact the drive is still working otherwise)? if so, how can i change the drive letter? by the way i've looked under "disk management" in the "administrative tools" and it doesnt show there either. thanks in advance.

Any working drive will always show up in disk management, maybe not at the top, but in the bottom section.

The drive letter assignment is not stored on the drive itself. If windows recognizes the device and installs drivers for it, then it should be ready to use. Check device manager first and see if the device is operating as it should (ie. no yellow exclamation point, etc).

If it is good, then go to Drive Management under Computer Management. You should see the drive there. Right click and partition it (this will delete ALL data currently on the drive). Once partitioned and formatted, it should show up in My Computer.

Go to computer manager and change the drive letter of the hard drive. It may not even be initialized or might not have a letter assigned to it. Also try to delete the partition and reformat it. To get to computer management:
Right click my computer->Manage->Disk Management tab.

If it's IDE make sure the jumpers are correct.
