I've been trying for several months to back up my DVD collection which now consists of well over 100 DVDs. I have used several tools to rip the DVD's into single ISO's or VOB files successfully, my favorite being DVD decrypter.

However I have had no luck converting VOB/ISO's to AVI files to save on space. I was using WinAVI for this and for some reason the first DVD I tried it with, Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story worked perfectly but now everytime I try and convert files it either crashes halfway through or puts its own subtitles in. I've tried almost everyother free program out there and encountered similar problems

Anyways I've bought a new computer with a 1TB Hard drive (I'll buy another one once that is filled) and I'm just wondering is it ok to just keep them as VOB/ISO files as I just want to back them up so I can watch them on my PC. I doubt I'll be burning them back onto DVD's. I'd rather maintain quality than save on space now.

Oh and my other question, will Vista premium run VOB/ISO files on its own or will I need VLC player or something like that?

If so is there anyway to make the files appear as a preview icon rather than the VLC traffic cone?
