windows xp skips sound and takes forever to start up and load apps

for some reason, my wife's laptop is taking forever to start up, once it gets to the desktop you gotta wait another long while to do ANYTHING! once it's ready to open apps, it still takes forever to launch.
another thing is if i try to play music or video, the sound and video will skip continuously. what's wrong?! i've tried almost everything. please help.

How old is it, how much memory is on it?
Also have a look at what desktop background she is running, some of them take up a lot of memory, she is better off running the plain default windows one.

at startup it loads webroot spysweeper with anti virus, but it goes directly to the tray, so it never opens up. nothing else starts up.
the default media player is the microsoft zune software. it does take up a good chunk of ram, but it's never slowed down the laptop.
i'll run process explorer in a bit.

the laptop is only 2 years old, but it's hardly ever used. she only uses it for school and bills, but i do sometimes use it to write dvds and games.
its an hp pavilion dv5000, 80 gb hdd, 512MB ram.
we've had trouble with this one before in the past, but i can't seem to fix this problem. we HAV been told that there have been tons of problems with this particular model, but every time i fix it it runs fine until some months later.

just got back from running process explorer and the only peaks i get are from idle process (94%-100%) and hardware interrupts (47%-78%) when running apps. everything else is 1-4%. are those peaks supposed to be normal?

Did you try Media Player Classic? Just download the zipped version and extract it... just to see if the issue carries over when using something with a much smaller footprint of RAM/CPU utilization.

i don't think it's my default media player causing all the problems, because it even happens with youtube videos and myspace music player. something is keeping the laptop from performing at top speed. maybe i can post a video of it to show you how its booting up and how it skips music and video.

One thing you can do is remove webroot spysweeper with it's built-in antivirus.
That program is very bloated, I've used it before and it slow down my entire computer (not only the internet). I only used spysweeper, but with the built-in antivirus I'm sure it's even slower. The reason is that spysweeper has to analyze all data that is read/write to the hard drive. When I remove spysweeper my computer sped up like when it was new.
Since you won't have a antispyware software install do the following.
1.get rid of internet explorer (malware/virus magnet) use firefox 3.0.
2.use the free avg 8.0 antivirus (basic and won't slow you down).
3.make you have a in/out basic firewall install. Not an all in one suite which will slow you down.
4.use the free "returnil" everytime you surf the internet, I use it as my antispyware software. It will defeat all known spyware/virus and won't slow down your computer. Make sure you use "returnil" if you decide to keep internet explorer as your browser, returnil will protect you against all the malware that will get through I.E.
It's probably not the answer you wanted to hear, but that webroot spysweeper is very bloated and will slow you down. If while surfing you notice some webpages taking 20-30 seconds to appear, that's spysweeper doing it's job. During startup spysweeper is checking to make sure there isn't any dormant malware trying to load itself into memory, that's why there is slowdown.

2.avg 8.0 free antivirus

4.returnil (free virtual system)
Haven't had any malware/virus attack in over a year and no computer slowdown with my extremely basic and mostly free security programs.
If spyware sweeper isn't your problem, other things that you can look at is
1. file corruption on your hard drives, you can do a scandisk (with box to fix errors checked).
2. the windows explorer thumbnail shell damaged, for this you will have to use the command prompt to disable the video thumbnail display.
3. hardware driver problems.

thank you very much for replying. and you're right, the spysweeper w/ anti virus thing wasn't what i wanted to hear (i just renewed the service 3 weeks ago). i hope this will speed things up and my wife can get off my ass about it. what if i disable the antivirus instead of getting rid of it completely? i'll try everything you suggested as soon as i have the chance. i've tried avg before and i was happy using it. i already have firefox installed on the laptop as well as all my other pc's and completly got rid of IE. i'll let you know how things work out.
btw: are there any other logs i should post just to make sure things are completly fixed?

With antivirus even if you disable it will still run in the background. It's best to uninstall, but if it's part of webroot spysweeper it might be harder than if it was a standalone. In the end you can only have one antivirus software installed at a time, the other antivirus needs to be completely uninstalled.
If you had a spyware problem, spyware sweeper would have found it. It is very good in doing it's job, it just slows down the computer down too much.
It's been over a year since I've used spyware sweeper, if you can disable it so that it only runs "on demand" and not in the background. You might still be able to use it. But most antispyware software like to run in the background even when disable.

thank you for your help. im just about to work on the laptop again, sorry its been a while. but i will let you know how things turn out. ill try to see how windows runs when disabling the webroot, it seems like it DOES bloat the system. if not, then im going to have to uninstall it unfortunately, since i just renewed it not 2 months ago. ill keep you posted!!!

just got back from uninstalling webroot, installing avg and returnil and im still having the same problem. nothing has changed! music and video still skips, there's still 26 processes running at start-up,pc usage at 99%, and it still takes about 5 minutes to boot up fully.
any other ideas?

Which process is taking up all the CPU usage? Look in Task Manager.
