Do you ever need to clean a burner lens?

I know I need to clean my reader lenses every few hundred reads. I have never cleaned it, and do not even know how to clean a burner lens. My DVD cleaner does not work in any burner I have had. My burner reads well but I am suspecting it is not burning nearly as good as it used to. I had been blaming the coasters on the media. It is still partially to blame but I used to do OK with mid grade a few minutes I got a verify error on stashed away top grade media. Time to cry HELP!

I have burned plenty of disks in the 4-5 years I have had it. I am fine with buying a new one but I try to save if I can. And NO I have not upgraded my firmware for ever but I am suspecting this is not that. I have had firmware problems and they were obvious. You get 'bad media' or 'no media' errors. I am starting to see skips that I haven't seen in years since I got my act together.

Any burner that's four to five years old and has done alot of work, imo is near it's end use. Upping the quality of media and updating firmware, may give it a little more longevity. At present prices...why not spend a little too get a whole lot more reliability?

My old pioneer (similar age) is still going strong but there will be a day real soon that it will crap out. Off I go to get another Pioneer that's for sure.

As far as cleaning goes, there are cans of compressed air available, I don't use the compressed air me self..I rely on those cleaner discs. These work ok but have a finite life. Your choice I guess. :)
