sorry for being a bit thick but i'm trying to figure out how all the Blu-ray set up works and i was wondering how deos true HD surround sound work? the blue-ray player will connect to the TV via HDMI, what about the audio ports? i want to use my av receiver which supports true HD sound, at the moment i have an optical port from my xbox360 to my receiver, is it the same for a blu-ray player? AND my receiver has hdmi ports, what would i use them for?
And one last thing is HD surround sound better than normal surround sound? thanks

It depends on if your receiver will do both audio/video over the hdmi ports (which most do if it supports TrueHD/Master Audio). If it does just hook up your bluray player to your receiver via hdmi. Then the hdmi out to your TV. If your xbox has hdmi out just hook that up into another input as well. If it doesn't leave it connected the way it is. I think TrueHD is better than normal surround, but once you have your system hooked up pop in a bluray and try out the different soundtracks on the disc.

HDMI will carry both the best quality video and audio.

ok thanks for the reply, so am i right in thinking that ite audio is done through the hdmi cable. and if my receiver does not support true HD then i take it there's no other way of getting true hd surround, because the speakers wont go into the TV. the specs for the receiver are:
# Digital Cinema Sound? Technology : Yes

# Dolby® Digital Decoding : Yes

# Dolby® Digital EX Decoding : N/A

# Dolby® Pro Logic® Decoding : Yes

# Dolby® Pro Logic® II Decoding : Yes

# Dolby® Pro Logic® IIX Decoding : N/A

# dts® Decoding : Yes
it says: Powerful HDMI? connectivity allows for uncompressed 1080i video to pass through directly to your HDMI? capable television (A separate cable would be needed for audio)
so does that mean a hdmi cable from the BR player to the AV receiver then 2 from the av receiver 1 for pitcure 1 for sound?

heres a link to the reciever if you want to have a look you might know a biut more of what i mean lol,

With that particular receiver you should hook it up as follows:

HDMI from Bluray direct to TV
Optical from Bluray to receiver

Component from Xbox360 direct to TV
Optical from Xbox360 to receiver

This will give you the best audio/video combination.

If you would like to get HD audio, I would suggest an Onkyo TXSR-606 or a Harmon Kardon AVR354, but its probably not a huge deal.
