Lightscribe vs inkjet printables

I'm new to this forum, and by the looks of the dates on my topic, I'm behind by three years! I'm a volunteer for a country singing contest. I have a laptop that has a lightscribe burner - I love it, but wish it was color as others seem to. I don't understand the inkjet printable capability. Does this print on a type of paper label that sticks to a cd/dvd, or does it print directly onto a specially made cd/dvd. We record the kids sinking, transfer it to a lightscribe cd then we burn the contestants picture onto the service - it's a nice keepsake and a good money-maker. Thanks for any responses. Happy voting in November.

leslie55- There are Disc / Media = DvD & CDR that are Printable in printers that have that capability - These have a surface that accepts the printing /ink and they are a little more expensive than regular Blank DVD or CD media ( The ones that are not designed to be printed on with a Inkjet printer ! ) but the cost has come down and the difference in cost may be a few cents ! Lightscribe as you have discovered is a Good Idea but Media cost is more expensive and because the Lightscribe process uses the same laser that burns your DVD's CD's ect... It can/will ? shorten the life of your burner if used extensively ! So that's a deal breaker there! From reading your Post I think a Inkjet Disc printer & Inkjet Printable Media is your best Bet - as You intend to put actual images= Photo's ect . of the Kids /contestants on the disc as opposed to text & small graphics - The printers print directly on the dic label surface area so no paper labels are needed or Used - Paper labels Bad news especially on dvds /cds trust me ! yah, What he said. LOL. Yah seriously. Lightscribe discs are considerably more expensive, Probably shorten a burners life, and in my opinion the burn quality just doesnt justify my/your buying them. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised at an inkjet printer that can print on a Taiyo yuden printable disc. I was darn near jumping up and down.

Heed the good advice given, but most of all, stay away from paper/stick on labels, they cause nothing but headaches and problems down the road. No matter how carefully thet are applied, they will shrink, warp, expand and cause playback issues over the long haul.
Search the forums and pick a highly recommended inkjet printer which is reliable. I've heard some good things about the Epson series but also have heard about their habit of dying early on in life, specifically the tray mechanism not working.

You said it blive. My R260 quit (quitting) after 1yr of faithfull service. But Ive Ran ALOT ALOT ALOT. No, i didnt keep replacing the cartridges. I ran a CISS. Its somewhat of a thirsty printer. It really needs its continuous ink system! Save wads and wads of money. I just replaced it with one of its successors. The R595. Cant wait to try it out! It is the tray giving me cause on the R260. Or atleast not wanting to draw it in often. I play with it retry, retry, retry. The cartridges are compatible with this model and others. For that reason i bought it as well as the scanner. Consolidating 2 units. EPSON OTHERWISE IS VERY GOOD. Other than the tray problem, LOVE IT. Professional grade DVDS, CDS, Photos. :)

All good advice above. Never use paper stick-ons. I hate product of Lightscribe and takes it toll on laser!
Save a ton of MONEY and buy Sharpies- lots of colors to choose. Really if you think about it, you print on a disc it might look great but you don't have them on display, but tucked away in some storage system. I use cd binders 100 or 200 a book and put the sharpie labeled dvds in the slots and then print a card stock thick copy of the front of the DVD case and slip it over the dvd under the clear plastic. Covers leave 2/3 of space so the index number I give the disc is visible for also quick id. I use generic ink carts for $1.59 each-free ink. JM2C

I figured I got 50 - 100 Discs + some regular printouts buying the cartridges. Most of the time less. The printer LOVES to clean its heads! Thats when i relized i need to go with another option. I bought (for 30$ on Ebay) 6 bottles of the appropriate colors for my printer, and average 600-800 jobs on a set of ink! Actually i think its more. Color quality was effected VERY SLIGHTLY.

Lightscribe vs Inkjet printable?
By far,inkjet printable will yield the higher quality disc covers. But there's lots of different inkjet printable media out there. You've got Full hub,Regular hub,white/matte,White/glossy/silver,and taiyo yuden watershields..
Full hub is the way to go because there's more printable surface.
White glossy is also very good.With the white/matte,the lighter covers don't turn out very well.
Taiyo Yuden watershields yield the best looking covers and they are waterproof.The only drawback is they won't print onto the last 1/2 mm of the outer edge of disc.
Shiny full hub inkjet printable taiyo yudens should also look very good.
There's also thermal printables,but they are different from the inkjet printable.

Just wait until you see one of his shiney printable disks, me I prefer sharpies. Cheaper in the long run. Plus lazier.

I'm in the sharpie camp too. I even bought 2 packs of 24 multi-color sharpies to make my disks more colorful.

LOL. :O Ive been experimenting with that one most of the week! Not lightscribe but OTHER tasks. mmm... Here is a screenshot of an Hp Lightscribe (Burn quality) I burned not even 3 weeks ago. Ahh man. Sorry guys... its way oversized. It was such a good scan, I captured it at full window size. 1680 x 1020. Last time I posted a LARGE screenshot, Somebody told me to keep them smaller like post size. So I went with the normal window size like everyone else. And if I downsize it now... I doubt it will retain all the info.
Hmmm... I just tried resizing with STOIK. Not good enough. Forget i mentioned it. Too Bad. 2nd or 3rd best scan ive ever had. The first was a silver printable TYG02 for those wondering.

yeah Buddy !!!! I agree with the sharpie society !!!! , I like the pretty commercial look of a well done inkjet printed disc don't get me wrong ! but like he others said if your not displaying the disc the oNly time you'll see it is the couple of seconds it takes to open the dvd case and insert the disc in your player !!! But Being Cheap & practical -Mainly cheap !!! a Sharpie works for me !!! but to each their own right !!! Were I to use Taiyo shiny theramls excluively or something like them Perhaps I would invest in a inexpensive Thermal printer ( if I were doing disc for distribution -wedding Videos, Birthday parties, Training /safety videos ect... where you would want your disc to look somewhat more professional!! I may go to a Inkjet Disc printer oneday when my epson gives out but till Then Sharpie me daddy !!!! lightscribe been there done that Good Idea but too expensive and wears out your burner faster who needs that ??? Jm2cents!!!!!
