If the .avi and the .srt files have the same name (myvideo.avi and myvideo.srt) if the files are burned to the same CD, the subtitles can be turned on/off using the remote when playing on the standalone DVD player.

An alternative method (and very fast) is to add the subtitles using Aviaddxsubs.
These subs can also be controlled using the remote.
Note that these subtitles can not be turned on in the PC media player.
When the subs have been added, the program saves the file with the .divx extension (myvideo.divx).
Some standalone players don't like this, so rename the file back to myvideo.avi.

The other option is to burn the subtitles into the video permanently.
These subs are always 'on' and cannot be turned off.

attar, I just wanted to mention that in order to play the burned DVD using the 2nd option you mentioned, one must have a DVD player that supports Divx formats, am I right?

Certainly, you are correct - inasmuch as viewing any AVI video on a standalone player requires that the video be encoded with DivX (or XviD) and that the player be DivX certified.

Option one (in contrast to option two) precludes viewing the subs when the video is played back on the PC - which makes it a nuisance to test before burning.
