I'm having some issues with Steam where the games will close after a few minutes saying HL2.exe is not responding.

I've spent over $100 on games for Steam, and vista is giving me nothing but trouble. I've been told to turn off User Account Control, and now windows keeps popping up boxes telling me there's a security risk.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix Steam? Here are my specs:
