I"m about to install vista 64 bit premium onto my new computer. I've never used vista before but my favorite media players are wmp11 and wmpc. Since I was advised not to mix 32 and 64 it codecs, can I Just install 32 bit codecs and stick to using 32 bit players? Will I be able to use hai media splitter 32 bit verson on my 64 bit OS? Can someone advise on codec packages VS. particular codecs for my mkv, subtitles, and spdif audio file needs?

Download CCCP. It contains the libavcodec for H.264 decoding, plus Haali Media Splitter.

If it's still jerky after that, then download Quicktime Alternative as well. It comes with the CoreAVC codec which is the fastest H.264 decoder.

Then go to Program Files > CCCP > Settings

Uncheck H.264 > Click Next > Click Apply

After that, install QT Alternative. It will then use CoreAVC for decoding, instead of the default one in CCCP.

CCCP + QT Alternative + Real Alternative is all you need for watching downloaded content on your computer.

Thanks. Have you seen sticky on avs forum for setting up of ffdshow and wmpc? http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=719041
Aside from the upscaling profiles lsf, seesaw (I can't use these because of a limited GPU) is it advisable to use his configuration for setup or are defaults fine or is their a middleground since much of his recommendations are very involved. Also, someone suggested I use vista codecs from shark007.net. Anyone familiar with it? Would this be an alternative to CCP or somethiing I could or should add in addition to CCP?

instead of vista why dont you try windows 7 i have just the basic codecs which are divx xvid and ac3 filter everything runs great also it has windows media player 12 and i've noticed on some of the divx or xvid video files wmp 12 dont even need to use them and i've not had a video skip jump or anything yet
by the way windows 7 is only a beta but it is worth getting and there are cracks patches that work on this to activate it
but its up to you m8
