My computer cannot connect to the internet, it has before just cant now, so the first thing i tried was eliminating the router. That did not work, so then i proceeded to contact my ISP and go through the usual stuff and still nothing. So then my ISP comes out to my house and they say that my house is getting a connection just fine. and they reconnect the router and my laptop, which can successfully connect. With the unsuccessful computer, i can see the routers configuration and the modem's, so the problem is located somewhere in the computer, it has a integrated intel(R) PRO/100 VE network card, with windows XP home, its a dell but i don't know the model number at the moment, the first thing i am going to do is reinstall the drivers for the connection, so maybe that will clear up the issue, but i doubt it since it can reach the router and modem, but nothing after that.

good one.. try the drivers first.

Copy the tcp/ip settings and any others in the network config screens from the working pc to the non working one.. if it doesn't work then something more subtle is going on... possibly you have not allowed a pass through the router for that machines ip (router firewall)

Just another really classic error is to have the router ip appearing in the dns settings.. they should be "automatic" unless you run your own dns server or use an alternative configuration on the router.

Finally.. from a command prompt try

ping www.google.com

and see if you get any responses.

written for blondes.. lots of good hints http://www.rosevines.org/troubleshooting-web-problems/

once you suss it out it won't be a problem again ;)

You can ping the router? Is it assigning you an ip??

check carefully in things like.. if it is DHCP then maybe your connection lease has expired or been lost. and lan restrictions.. Some routers have settings where you can restrict certain machines between certain hours etc. (or mine does anyway)

Is your router ip your default gateway ip?.. It might be better to run through the network connections wizard again then disable and enable the network card.

Your modem isn't going to be a problem because your other pc is connecting through just fine.. so we can probably discard that.. Problem exists I believe between pc and router.

ping 127.0.0.1

ping <your pc ip>

ping <router ip>

ping <other pc ip>

which ones give replies??

Try allowing more than 2 ip's.. the modem will be using an ip, though it will be on a different network entirely.. usually 10.0.0.xxx

Did you read the page I linked to and try the suggestions there?

if so read this... http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using...etup/wired.mspx

last resort hotel... try changing the cable ;)

(I don't like the xp network setup procedure.. it seems very hit and miss)

Don't see how.. We have no evidence that this machine has ever been connected to the internet through this setup/network before.

It's just as likely it needs the ARP cache clearing.
