I have two copies of the latest hit film Atsuhime, NHK and playing this year on better TV stations (not PBS unfortunately)arounnd the world. I have the PPXclub copies with beautiful video quality and hardsubbed Chinese subtitles. I also have [big thank you shout out to d-addicts.com]Atsuhime copies with ENGLISH Subtitles. Sadly, many of the episodes, 50 in all, have too much digital interference to enjoy. My thought is take the d-addicts english subtitles and put them on the PPX episodes. I tried using subrip and DVD shrink on an episode and got nothing.
Is this a good plan and what am I going to run into? Is it not worth the effort?

Basically, you can demux the subtitle streams from the English video and hardsub them into the Chinese video.

But that depends on what your file formats are. Is the English one in .mkv format? .ogm? .avi? etc.

In addition, if the English video IS in an .mkv container (or some other container) format, AND if the subtitles are an .srt file, then you can just use ConvertXtoDVD and it can work the .srt subtitle file into the project. Then you'll get subs you can turn on and off.

...but yeah, before all that, I need to know your file formats.

All these files are in the AVI and SRT format. Although sometimes I think the software writers are biased toward other sub formats.
What you said is interesting turning on or off.

Oh, that makes things really simple, then.

You can use ConvertXtoDVD to change the Chinese .avi into a DVD image/folder, and in one of the tabs, there's an option for subtitles. Click on whichever subtitle you want, and in the resultant DVD, you should get a movie with subs that you can turn on/off.

...you might have to retime the subs, though. And I'm also worried about the subtitles being muddled, since they'll be placed over the Chinese subtitles. But if you can read it, then cool beans. Good luck.
