Is my Swap Magic disc just a dud?

I bought Swap Magic 3.6 discs a while back. I replaced the top of my slim ps2 with a flip-top, so it should work. The problem is, neither Swap Magic disc will load. My ps2 will make a peculiar whirring sound and will just bring me to the browser, at which point it will tell me it cannot read the disc. Only two or three times have the discs successfully brought me to the swap magic loading screen. If this wasn't an issue enough, it won't load my Japanese game Tales of Rebirth and instead insists it's not a valid PS2 game. My Tales of Rebirth is not burnt and it is in mint condition, so I know it can't be the disc itself. Curiously, today I managed to get swap magic to load a NA version of Drakengard without issue, right after it had rejected Tales of Rebirth.

Also, my PS2 loads and plays other discs without issue, so I don't think it's the flip-top.

Should I just order a new swap magic disc, or is there something I'm doing wrong that prevents the disc from working?
