I have Swap Magic 3.6 and downloaded 3.8 from a torrent site. I followed the instructions and burned what appears to be a working DVD.
I boot with 3.6 and then swap for 3.8 which seems to load up fine, but when I then insert a backup (doesn't matter if it is a DVD-5 or DVD-9, don't think it is a TOC thing) it won't boot the game, and I instead get the red 'insert a PS2 disk' screen, as if I'd tried to boot directly from a backup.
Anyone got ideas on what is going wrong/what I am doing wrong?

Ok when you swap for the 3.8 you do need to insert a higher TOC disk first.
Once your SM 3.6 starts up
Using Swap method insert 3.8 DVD
Load it up
Hit EJECT
Place High TOC Original Disk in
Let it read and register
Now using Fliptop or slide tool
Place your backup in
Choose your cheats and start game

Ah, that's me screwed then because I don't have an original with the same or greater TOC than the backup... :(
Do I need to refresh the TOC every time I want to play the backup, or just once?

I believe its every time you would have to refresh.
Is it just the cheats you want from the SM 3.8
You might want to look in My Profile, check My Folder "Windrider"
I have Armax that works with Swap Magic. The instructions are there on how to use it.

Ah, still having problems :( Guess I'm an idiot...
I've created the memory stick as per the tutorials there and can get to the file browser no problem. Here's what I'm doing:
Insert SM3.6 and boot the PS2 with the mem stick in.
SM3.6 loads followed by the file browser.
Using the swap tool I switch the SM3.6 disk for GHWT backup
I navigate the file browser to mass:/ then launch ESR (direct version)
The disk spins up and freezes at the magenta screen
This method works fine for e.g. GH:Aerosmith which is single layer.
Any idea what is going wrong?

Just to add, I patched the GHWT iso first using the Toxic DL patcher and then the ESR patcher.

lol, nope your not an idiot. You have patched it correctly in the right order.
If I remember reading correctly on the alucard.cc/forums, they said ESR r9a dvdv direct.elf works.

Bugger, that's the one I'm using...
Diskwise, I'm using Verbatim DVD+R DL disks and burning at 1x speed in Alcohol 120% so I don't think that's the problem.
Maybe I still need a TOC refresh or something?

I am not sure if that could be your issue.
I always burn at 2.4x using Verbatim DL DVD+R using imgburn.
ESR r9b works with all my other DVD9 backups. I don't have this particular one as I don't play it.
You don't need to do TOC refresh using ESR.
I also had to clean my laser on my V14 with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip, rubbing gently in a circular motion.
They played great then.
So you may want to try that even first.

yeah my PS2 is an old second-hander so I reckon I'll crack it open and give the laser a clean. Failing that I might give the DVD5 rip kit a go but it seems a shame when I've got a DVD9 here...
Thanks for the help though, I'd never have got this far without it! :D

Oddly I did look at getting a fliptop but out of laziness I just use the slide tool; it works, so I never bothered to get the fliptop. And the PS2 ended up as a convenient place to put my router lol
